nOOb - Stock Brakes Squeaking

All this talk about brakes and no one has mentioned the ol' brake stomp. One (of many) reasons that brakes make noise is that the face of the rotor is not flat and has tiny little grooves like a record. I your pad and rotor don't match exactly you get a song (squeal) warm up the brakes and do a few mid speed, medium pressure stops and then a few 40-45mph panic stops.

As far as the vibration while braking that is a warped rotor and if there is enough material on the rotor you can have that resurfaced.

If you only get some noise in the morning that is normal and is cause by condensation overnnight collecting on the rotor and creating a thin rust layer. Aka morning sickness

i've had a squeaking front passenger side brake for some time now. i've pulled it and used some stop squeal from pep boys (purple stuff), and it works for about 3 or 4 days, then the noise starts again. i may pull it again this weekend and try the sandpaper on the pads along with the brake goo, and see how long that lasts.

I have the same problem.

It may be a bad caliper, wouldn't be the first time we've seen that. Could also be the sliders not lubed. I see you are in NJ, if you want to have us check em out, drop us an email and we can investigate it for you.

I might schedule a 60k mile maintenance at your place in the next 5000 miles. I reapplied that CRC aerosol brake quiet stuff and regreased the sliders. By sliders, are you referring to the thin metal pieces at the top and bottom of the caliper (they contact the ends of the brake pads).

Regardless, it appears some of the rubber boots at the end of the pistons have worn away.

Also, what's Subaru's recommended replacement interval of the AC, P/S, and alternator belts?

Cool. They don't spec a milage except to check every 30 k miles. We always check at 30k intervals. The sliders are actually what the caliper rides on. At the 60k it looks like we will need to rebuild those calipers so we will regrease etc for yah.

My front left rhythmically squeaks with the rotation of the tire when no brake is applied. Barely depressing the brake pedal eliminates the noise.

The noise also comes and goes. It doesn't happen every time I drive. I had the fronts disassembled and reinstalled a while back which mostly fixed it, but not completely.

When I was on OEM pads (these are OEM quality, different brand) they liked to squeak under normal braking but was never consistent either.

I've had squeaky brake gremlins on every car I've owned. Which are two old volvos and my LGT. :spin:

Like this?

I was braking slightly so my friend with the camera could try to film it properly. The car is going to the dealer tomorrow morning after staying in the garage for two weeks..

wow, old thread.

My car was doing that in December, and I was able to fix it myself. The dust (heat?) shield behind the rotor was rubbing on the rotor. Apparently, when the calipers squeezed it wouldn't rub. I simply bent it out of the way with my hand, then no more noise.

Would you please PM me with a ball-park estimate on how much it would cost to rebuild the calipers?

Caliper issues here as well, but not related to the heatshield. Had to change some parts at the dealer, figured I'd just let them do it since I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.. Huge mistake - billed me 216 dollars for the fix! (keep in mind I live in Norway, but anyway... :p )

My 08 squeaks as well with ceramic brake pads, which is normal i understand with little pressure applied. the rotation squeal is very irritating! have to hit the brakes hard to get it to stop squealing. put the car on the rack and turn the wheel squeaks when it gets to a certain spot!

Seems like a really common issue (squeal under light braking). Not sure why that is but I fixed mine by

1. Cleaning all parts

2. Using ceramic brake grease on all parts (not the pad face or rotor face obv.)

3. checking that the dust shield/shims aren't rubbing

couldn't tell you which one it was but that's a good place to start.
