Response from Subaru RE: mirrors and stink

Recommended Posts

This was my original email to them last week:

I am sure this problem is not new to you, but I am inquiring about a foul

smelling 'burnt clutch' scent that follows my car around. I just purchased a

2005 Subaru Legacy GT Limited and I didn't expect for it to have this problem.

I don't even have to drive it very far and I can smell it. The car has less

than 300 miles on it and I have been told this is a problem unique to the new

Legacy. I have read a lot about it on Legacy message forums and it concerns me.

I am also very very concerned about the visual quality of my driver side mirror.

There is a double vision thing happening with it. Its like when you put a

mirror behind tinted glass. You see the reflection on the glass, but then you

also see a slightly offset reflection from the mirror. I am having this issue

with the side mirror on my car and I would like to know if Subaru is aware that

the Legacy GTs with heated mirrors are having that problem.

A response to these questions would be appreciated. My dealership told me to

address them to you as they have no explaination for the problems. Thank you.

This is the reply that I got today:

you for your message to Subaru of America, Inc. We are sorry to learn of

the difficulty you are experiencing with your 2005 Subaru Legact GT.

We would not know why your vehicle is having concerns of a burning smell or

possible clarity problems witht he heater mirrors since we are not actually

inspecting the vehicle. Because we rely on the expertise of the factory trained

technicians at authorized Subaru dealerships to inspect, diagnose, and repair

our vehicles, we would have to refer you to back to your dealer for this

concern.

We would be unable to explain the other comments on other websites. While some

concerns may be valid, each actual mechanical concern is treated on a case by

case basis until our engineers and service personnel have gather enough data to

make a fact- based determination about a particular concern. You dealer should

be contacting Subaru Technical Support if they are unable to explain or address

a particular condition. Please make another appointment and contact us with the

date, time and name of the dealer and we will ne happy to follow up with them.

We have documented your concerns in our customer service system. We use such

data from customers to log and track dealer and product performance and consumer

preferences. Please feel free to contact us with any future comments, questions

and concerns at 1-800-SUBARU3. Refer to case # 728880 when calling. This will

help expedite your call. Thank you!

Once again, I think the only solution to our concerns is to have as many people report them as possible.

I hate those form letters. I wonder if they're electronically. I'd love to send an e-mail and see if it came back with "We're sorry to hear that the heater seats are causing flames to shoot out of your anus- we'll address this issue right away". I wonder if anyone actually reads some of them.

Someone send them one telling them that someone set them up the bomb and see if it comes back with "your vehicle is having concerns of someone set you up the bomb".

My driver side mirror isn't flat, but warped. If I park near a building with a flat roof and look at it's reflection, there isn't a straight line from the left side of the mirror to the right. I can see how some people might get double vision from it.

It also has a whistle coming from the mirror when the car gets over 20mph. I keep thinking it's sirens coming after me for driving the way I do with this car and keep slowing down. Talk about a buzzkill. This thing has got to go.

It's the only thing I have issue with on the car (touring suspension aside, lol). I'll be asking the dealer to fix this when I take it in for it's first oil change. It's a safety part isn't it?
