Taking prices from Gasbuddy.com; lowest price gas in NY (not sure where you are) gas is $1.64 and diesel is $2.50

From the Subaru UK website, the diesel Forester gets an extra 8.75 mpg (US) over it's gas equivalent.

For a 600 mile drive, you will consume 16.3 gallons of diesel ($40.75) or 21.4 gallons of gas ($35.10).

Therefore it's still cheaper to drive a gas powered car.

Same around here, wierd. For most of my life diesel has been much cheaper than gas.

Diesel here is 10% above regular (95 ron), add to this that diesels has a road tax that's 2 times that of a gas car for the legacy. (about $400/year for diesel)And i'm on holiday & typing on a cellphone - no spellcheck & only touchscreen - it sucks!

  • 3 weeks later...
Throw on two more cylinders, another 1000cc of displacement, and another turbo and I'll buy one.

I hate diesel: smell, smoke, dirty, sound, non-sportivity...

But a Legacy with 3.0 or 3.6 h6 bi-turbo mt6 awd, so with a truck torque... I'll may hesitate...few seconds:lol:

Here in France, 80% of new sell cars are diesel!!!

And taxes are for gas cars: 1200$ for new licence plates for me (less than 600$ for a diesel one), 3500$ pollution tax when you buy a new Legacy 3.0 or a STI, 2100$ for a wrx), because of the CO² only!!!

Gas is 1.5$/L (2$/L this summer... that should mean 8$ per gallon, for you, no?), diesel is 1.2$/L...:mad::mad:

So here, a lot of people are buying small diesel cars (there is a 1000$ bonus when you buy a car with less than 130g CO²/km!!! 3.0 r Spec B is...280g CO²/km:rolleyes:), without particule filter: great for ecology!!!!!!!:spin::spin::spin:

That depends a lot on the driver and driving conditions.

The Legacy is specified to 33.6/49 city/highway for the sedan.

And at the end of January there will be an Impreza diesel available with similar figures.

Claimed 0-60mph on 8.6 seconds.

8 seconds to 60, so you get the benefits of AWD, the advantage of fuel economy, with the only sacrifce being a few seconds off your 0-60. Thats not bad for the consumer market. If we can just get people in the states to stop being afraid of deisel.. (and of course the price is currently cost inhibitive.. but.. the future is uncertain says the magic 8ball.)

personally for me it would make me beat myself to death on the steering wheel waiting to get up to speed tho. but I never said it was for me anyway :p

Well think of a Legacy diesel that made around 260-270hp and 420lb-ft of torque. Or as you would understand it better 194-201Kw and 570Nm.

I think that could be fun myself.

I would trade in my '08 LGT for a diesel Legacy wagon with a 5 or a 6-speed.

How much can that diesel tow? Same as the 2.5L turbo?

Here it's rated on Legacy for 1700 kg. The 2.5i is rated for 1800kg while the 3.0 is rated for 2000. Since we don't have the 2.5 turbo I can't compare that.

On Forester it's good for 2000kg on all models except the 4-speed AT, which is rated to 1500kg.

And the Impreza diesel is rated to 1600kg.

But that rating also depends on local legal requirements, so it may differ from country to country. And some of the figures may actually depend on marketing decisions. If you had rated the Impreza to 2000kg it would have cut down the sales of the Forester.

bring it on SOA. i mean it can't be slower than a 2.5i

The 0 to 100 km/h for the diesel sedan is 8.5 seconds, which makes it really good - a bit slower than the 3.0AT with 8.2 seconds, but better than the 2.5i with 9.3 seconds. The top speed is only 208km/h, but top speed doesn't tell much in reality.

That is about 3750 lbs. Not bad at all. Good point about the unibody.

The max I would tow is three bikes on a trailer, so about 2000 altogether, plus a car full of gear and people. Which I think my LGT does now, as long as the trailer is equiped with brakes.

It was a nice ride, basically not that different from the '04 gasoline 2.0L I have when it comes to the drivers area.

The difference was that the engine did have better torque - a lot better at low RPM:s, at least while you did keep it over 1000rpm. I did a test acceleration from about 800rpm, and it was never hesitating, but there were some minor vibrations at that RPM.

The engine is a 2.0L diesel engine with a combined supercharger and turbo, which means that it has better torque at lower rpms and a good performance at high rpms.

You wouldn't notice that it actually is a diesel in normal situations, a slight diesel sound when the engine is cold, and that it has to be glowed to start. The latter surprised me a bit since direct injection has been around for a while now.

One thing that is really surprising is the size of the engine - it's about 2" shorter than the 4 cylinder gasoline engine - which means that there is an incredible amount of space between the radiator fans and the engine. That would make it very simple to replace the belts.

I was also informed that there will be a beefed-up diesel in the future, but not that much more powerful right now, about 170hp.

And I also did get the answer why the diesel for the moment is delivered only with the MT5 gearbox - it's because the engine has a much higher torque - which the current AT gearboxes can't stand. They are developing a new AT gearbox especially for the diesel, so we will probably see that in a year or so.

And no word on a 6-cylinder diesel, which would make the car a beast to count on when towing. But the 4-cylinder isn't bad at all!

As for the pricing - it's a little more expensive than the gasoline, and the road tax here is about the double compared to the road tax for the gasoline version, but currently that evens out and makes the diesel cheaper already after about 4000km according to the salesman.

So - with AWD in a wagon with diesel - can you get a better car for daily driving? Sure - Jeremy Clarkson still don't like diesel!

No but Jeremy thought the outback 2.5 turbo was possibly the worlds most perfect car :)
