Hella Supertone install

Recommended Posts

Well, i finished up this install last night. There is another thread detailing the install, but the pictures are no longer available, so i figured i would just snap some photos of mine for referencing. I will try to get a list of what was purchased, but i cant remember everything.

First off, the hellas. They come red. But i didnt want red, so i painted mine black.

I then made a bracket. I had some extra parts of stuff laying around so i just used it. but the piece of flat steel was purchased from lowes for like 4 bucks. it is like 1" wide, and comes in 4'. This bracket you can make any size you want. I think mine ended up being around 10" long.

But i centered it on the hood latch and made sure nothing would hit, centering up everything. I then just drill the 3 holes into the bracket. 2 for the horns and 1 for the mounting bolt. The below picture is the bolt in which i used. It is a 12mm.

This is a thread that i also used. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1133994&highlight=supertones

In this thread you will notice a jumper wire ( Y wires ). I ended up making 3 of these. 1 for the stock horns. And 2 for the hellas ( 1 positive, and 1 negative ). see picture. Female connectors was used at the end of the wires minus the vampire clip at the Y's.

14 Gauge wire ( black )

msc male/female connectors.

In line fuse

20A fuse for the inline.

what i done.

* remove the negative connection from the battery. ( i didnt )

*Remove the grill.

*i removed the air intake to obtain decent pictures and to just make my wiring a little easier but you dont have to do this.

*remove the fender well. I believe it is held on by 3 grommets/ pop-its. Pull it back to be able to access the stock horns. ( forgot to get a picture of that ).

* Un hook the Stock horn wires from the horn itself. On this step, instead of snipping off the factory connector, i just used a male connector and plugged them in, in case i wanted to go back to stock horns. I used the jumper ( Y ) wire i made and ran those wires to where i was going to mount the relay.

* i then mounted my hellas with the bracket i made. hooked up the jumper wires ( 1 jumper for positive, and 1 for negative. ). I gave myself plenty of extra wire so that way i could hide and route the wire anywhere i wanted.

* I determined the amount of wire needed for the ground for the hellas and routed the wire to the grounding location in which i would be using. I chose to use the frame as the ground. ( passenger side frame rail )

* I then ran the positive wires from the hellas to the relay location. Also using the jumper wire that i made.

* i then ran the ground wire for the relay. I used the bolt that is located right behind the engine fuse box. This bolt is 10mm. Ran the wire to the relay.

* Then the inline fuse was ran from the battery to the relay. I had to extend it so i picked up some heavier gauged wire to match the in-line fuse wire. But, the wire is ran to the relay location. If you have not done so already, remove the fuse that is in the inline.

* I then mounted the relay. i chose an easy spot to mount this. I did not want wires running from here to there, so i just picked a neutral location and put it there which was beside the washer fluid resevoir. A self tapping screw was used.

* At this time i hooked up all the wires to the specific spots/ports have you. here is a quick cheat guide.

30-positive ( inline fuse )

85-Relay ground.

86-stock horns

87-positive connection for the hella supertones.

Place the 20 amp fuse in the inline fuse holder, and test the horns.

This was my personal choice, but i wire loomed and zip tied everything. to dress it up and to clean up the work to give it a little bit more of a proffesional look. Like i said, tried.

And the finished product.
