Rack and pinion?

Ok, so instead of trying to beat myself to a pulp and self diagnose this car, I took it to a muffler shop. Asked them to check the cv joints, as I am getting bad vibration/popping noises in the front end of my subie. They showed me that there are two inner boots that were torn up, said they're rack and pinion and need to be replaced. They showed that the CV joint boots were FINE, and not torn. Are they correct? In some states like mine, split rack boots are a safety item and should be replaced.

When do you feel the vibration? Is it during turning or straight driving? When braking or at highway speed?

When do you hear the popping? When turning> have the ball joints been looked at by the same shop? is there play in the wheels at all?

Vibration is all over...straight or not. Popping sounds I can hear going over bumps, and turning. I am taking it tomorrow to Les Scwab, its a tire shop here near me. They don't charge to look this stuff over. I'm going to have them check EVERYTHING...ball joints, Tie rods, the rack and pinion, and wheel bearings.

Is it at speed over 35-40 mph? Have the motor mounts been checked? Wheels balanced?

Becareful. When diagnosing a problem, you get what you pay for in most cases. I would pay for someone to look at my car better than someone who knows they aren't getting paid to look it over. Have them pay close attention to the ball joints, struts/strut mounts, swaybar bushings and endlinks.

Vibration etc usually starts right around 40 mph. Wheels have been balanced yes. Just had the struts replaced. BUT, OUR mechanic did not align the car after replacing the struts...so we need an alignment. But it was doing this before we replaced the struts so...

Ok so I need to have the motor mounts checked, the ball joints, swaybar, endlinks (what is that?).

Why didn't he align it as it is part of the repair?

Endlinks are just that. The sway bar bolt to them and they bolt to part of the front end of the vehicle. You have both front and rear.

We have no idea why he didn't do it. Maybe we weren't specific enough. Anyways, that's beyond my point. I don't care, I prolly wont' be taking my cars back to him.

Ok, so I need to have those checked along with tie rods as well. I'm having it all checked. We're likely going to have the rack and pinion boots done, cuz they're already off and the lube is gone. Might end up replacing that whole unit...depends on what costs less. We're on a very tight tight budget right now...so.

Actually there is no lubrication under those rack boots unlike an axle boot. They just protect the shafts and the rack from getting dirt and dust in them. The Rack itself could be $500-$650+ for just the part. When they replace the steering rack boots make them do an alignment. Any place that is competent shop should know that it needs to be done when replacing struts and steering rack/rack boots. Otherwise your tires will chew up quickly.

Ahh I see. I found a few reman racks on rockauto for like 240. Oh of course, we will have the alignment done, once we find out what's wrong and get it fixed.

Good luck with it. I refuse to use after market parts on my car. What you save today, will cost you extra tomorrow.
