Exhaust leak

I can smell exhaust when I have my windows down. I took the car to Meineke today, they told me that there's two holes in the muffler, and that there's gaskets that are most likely bad. Here's some pics:

Would these cause me to be able to smell exhaust in the cabin with windows down, as well as smelling it through the dash vents on a road trip?

hmm.. your car is a 93.. things like this start happening at that age.. that really isn't a good thing. I'd think that a leak under the car, you really wouln't be able to smell when you're rally movin with decent speed on the road.. does the car sound different?

I would replace the entire exhaust because the flanges may also be causing the leak(rusting due to age).

What is with the band clamp? Do you have an exhaust rattle? If so, best bet is to remove the heat shields.

I hear something rattling underneath, have no clue what it is tho, possibly that heat shield. Is it a bad idea to keep them off tho?

Nope. We do it all the time. That band clamp is doing nothing and we see many cars where they have tried that with no success. You can have them welded, but to permanently get rid of the noise, remove the shields.

Well, took car to a different shop today. They put it on a hoist, running, and they said they could not find any leaks at all. They checked the system. He said the car is running lean, maybe that's why we can smell it so much inside the car. Great, so another thing to try and tackle.

Maybe you should take it to a place that wants to diagnose the car and knows what they are diagnosing.
