machgirl
I can smell exhaust when I have my windows down. I took the car to Meineke today, they told me that there's two holes in the muffler, and that there's gaskets that are most likely bad. Here's some pics: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/nikbait/000_0108.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/nikbait/000_0109.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/nikbait/000_0106.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/nikbait/000_0107-1.jpg Would these cause me to be able to smell exhaust in the cabin with windows down, as well as smelling it through the dash vents on a road trip? ArcTec34
hmm.. your car is a 93.. things like this start happening at that age.. that really isn't a good thing. I'd think that a leak under the car, you really wouln't be able to smell when you're rally movin with decent speed on the road.. does the car sound different? machgirl
I don't know. We bought it this way, so I have no idea of what it would sound like normal.
ArcTec34
excessively loud coming from the engine bay, instead of from the muffler?
machgirl
Its not excessively loud by any means. I think I can hear a leak, coming from under the car....but its not real loud.
Long Island Legacy
Dude i would have that exhaust mid section redone. It looks like it gonna need replacing sooner or later. Your prob better off getting a entire new system.
machgirl
Yeah, but that can get expensive we don't have a buttload of money right now. Replacing the gaskets is the cheapest thing we can do right now.
blackfang
I would replace the entire exhaust because the flanges may also be causing the leak(rusting due to age). What is with the band clamp? Do you have an exhaust rattle? If so, best bet is to remove the heat shields. machgirl
I hear something rattling underneath, have no clue what it is tho, possibly that heat shield. Is it a bad idea to keep them off tho?
blackfang
I hear something rattling underneath, have no clue what it is tho, possibly that heat shield. Is it a bad idea to keep them off tho? Nope. We do it all the time. That band clamp is doing nothing and we see many cars where they have tried that with no success. You can have them welded, but to permanently get rid of the noise, remove the shields. GTTuner
FWIW I do not see any carbon trail or tracks at any of those connections or around those holes in the muffler. Id be willing to bet you have a gasket leak on one of the header pipes.
machgirl
YEah, that's kinda what I was leaning towards....guess I will just have to save up the money to have the entire system replaced.
machgirl
Well, took car to a different shop today. They put it on a hoist, running, and they said they could not find any leaks at all. They checked the system. He said the car is running lean, maybe that's why we can smell it so much inside the car. Great, so another thing to try and tackle.
blackfang
How does he know it is lean? ArcTec34
smells bad as in pre-cat goodness?
machgirl
Dunno what that means, but it smells a bit like gas/exhaust mixed in together..really rich and gross.
blackfang
Maybe you should take it to a place that wants to diagnose the car and knows what they are diagnosing.
