ibhknl Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Is a 2000 2.5 interference or not? I've found ALOT of confilicting information on this, even within this forum... a few links... http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26001&highlight=2.5+TIMING+BELT+BROKE http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80045&highlight=INTERFERENCE+2000+2.5 http://autorepair.about.com/od/glossary/ss/timin-belt-inf2_6.htm http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2268&highlight=interference+2.5 http://www.troublecodes.net/tbelt/subarutb.shtml http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11704&highlight=interference+2.5 http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48494&highlight=interference+2.5 Alright, anyone have any documentation to end this? Its driving me crazy, cause my wifes 2000 2.5 has a seized up timing belt. I'm just trying to figure out what my damage is and if it is interference how can i see if i need new valves... or more!
subarupartsdude Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 It is an interference engine. If you jumped timing, you most likely bent a valve or two.
Fivspeed Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 What exactly do you mean by seized up timing belt? Did a pulley seize, or is your engine seized? Will your crank rotate at all? As I write this, I am thinking of the Honda inline 4's that I have replaced timing belts on, but should be similar. (Also want to mention that there might be an easier way) Assuming the crank roatates, pull the spark plugs, gently turn the cams and crank as needed to reset the engine to TDC. Install new timing belt. Gently rotate crank and see if anything binds. If not, put plugs back in and check for cylinder compression within specs. If okay, I would button it all back up and start it up. I wrote this at lunch, super quick, I might have left something out.
gianspi Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 It is an interference engine. If you jumped timing, you most likely bent a valve or two. +1 IIRC the 2.2L and 3.3L SVX engines were non-interference. I think all 2.5L are interference engines. enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.
ibhknl Posted April 18, 2008 Author Posted April 18, 2008 What exactly do you mean by seized up timing belt? Did a pulley seize, or is your engine seized? Will your crank rotate at all? quote] By seized up i mean: I took the drivers side timing belt cover off and cranked the engine. The engine cranked, but the cam did not move, the cranking was very labored. I can see missing teeth on the timing belt. I disassemble the front end today, took out the plugs to, and looked at the timing belt. The belt is stripped on the crank, and missing teeth in other places. Obviously the crank has been 'free wheeling' and the cams have not been moving. I turned the crank backwards and got the cams lined up, but the crank was about ½ in from its mark. So, I removed the timing belt and attempted to turn the crank the remaining ½ inch backwards to line up with the mark. I applied quite a bit of pressure and it would not move backwards, so I tried moving it forwards, gently of course. It turns just over 1/4 of a turn forwards, and stops, I applied a little pressure, but not much, don't know if its bumping a valve or what. Further: The passenger cam is on the timing mark and rotates freely about 1/4 of a turn forward then stops. The drivers cam is stiff to move, and currently on the mark for timing, it will turn backwards, but sort of 'jumps' exactly 1/4 of a turn. I moved it by hand, so I grabbed it and turned it back forward and it jumps back into place. Any idea's guys? What should I do no next? Is it normal for the cams to act like that? Why cant I turn my crank? And who shot JFK?
ibhknl Posted April 25, 2008 Author Posted April 25, 2008 New adjuster is installed and the belt is much tighter. The new tensioner is much quieter upon startup and moves allot less. Unfortunately, I got tranny fluid all over the belt and gears, which I promptly cleaned off with some brake cleaner and clean towels. I cleaned it once, wiped it off, turned the cams a bit, and then cleaned it again completely. Will the tranny fluid damage the belt? I did a compression test and the results are: 1-183 2-190 3-185 4-190. What do you guys think? Those numbers ok? I have yet to drive it, battery went dead, waiting for it to charge, I'll post up after a drive. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/images/statusicon/user_online.gifhttp://forums.nasioc.com/forums/images/buttons/report.gif http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/images/misc/progress.gifhttp://forums.nasioc.com/forums/images/buttons/edit.gif
Fivspeed Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I haven't verified those compression figures against the manual (I'm at work), but they sound great; consistent and high. It sounds like you didn't end up damaging anything. If so, sounds like you really lucked out.
