monugs
Ok, so I'm getting ready to head to Vail tonight, and just realized I have no coolant! The manual says use Subaru coolant only. Thats not possible tonight, should I use other coolant?
bsdzine
How come we've never spotted each other?!?!? I was at keystone for a morning session! anyways, I am not too sure about the subaru. I've only used the OEM coolant from the dealer... only my grand am, after 100k, i just started to use water after i would burn thru coolant very rapidly.... but i don't recommend it for the scooby.. sorry i can't help you! but welcome to the board, hit upt he mountain west section if you wanna meet/chat with your colorado neighbors! brian
han
I would say that any coolant should be fine.
sexylegacy
If you're worried, get some good coolant and then throw some Red Line watter wetter in with it. It reduces surface tension on the coolant and helps cool the car even better.
gianspi
Use any coolant that is approved for aluminum radiators (which is pretty much all of them). enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.
SuperCleanLGT
I would also add some water pump lube ( coolant conditioner)
DoubleM
I use regular coolant, never bought OEM. You should be fine.
sooberoo
More serious question would be why do you have no coolant? You haven't blown a head gasket have you?
taskforcefreddy
Use any coolant that is approved for aluminum radiators (which is pretty much all of them). +1. Older types of antifreeze and coolants would eat through aluminum blocks, or maybe erode is a better word. I use Prestone designed for aluminum setups and have no problems. super.duper.BL6
if you just need a little bit to top it off, distilled water will work in a pinch.
Guest
Use only Subaru coolant. A dealer told me that if there is a cooling system related claim Subaru asks for sample of the coolant for analysis. If it does not meet their requirements (which only their coolant meets, I believe) you might get warranty trouble. In a pinch add any non-long life coolant, and have the coolant replaced later. Finally, the fact that you lost coolant is not good, the car should not be losing coolant. When was the last time you checked it and how low it is. Hops
Just noticed mine was low a few days ago... The small hose next to the radiator cap had popped off! I don't know how that happened, but I put a hose clamp on it. Buy my cars!
chenc544
if you just need a little bit to top it off, distilled water will work in a pinch. Yes, but with a caveat. Just make sure you have enough coolant in the system so you are not skewing the "anti-freeze" to water ratio too much. That ratio determines the freezing point of your coolant. Vail + Feb = below freezing point of water. Anyway, you should be OK with distilled water unless you are running 90% water or something like that.
