aakrusen Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 My wife drives an '06 Legacy with an auto. It's time to change the tranny fluid. I've never done an auto before so what is involved? What tools are needed? Shops around here want $100-$150 to do it. Is that expensive? If so, why?
Jim_KT Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 I'm not sure what everyone else's 5EAT's drain plugs are the same, but mine required the following: - T70 Torx for the front differential - T50 or equivalent sized Allen for the transmission When I replaced my transmission fluid at 30k miles, I only drained what was in the pan (~4.2 quarts) and refilled with fresh fluid (SOA p/n SOA868V9241). What is in the pan is not representative of how much the transmission actually holds. A complete drain/flush/refill will require much more fluid than 4.2 quarts. If you're doing a complete flush and fill, then you might need up to 20 quarts. Out of the 20 quarts roughly 13-15 will be used to fill the transmission and the rest will be used to flush out for good measure. Subaruparts.com charges $5.84 (before tax and shipping) for a quart of genuine 5EAT/PSF fluid. With that in mind, a complete flush could get expensive.
