my stick is limp!

no no, really.

I've got a 96 5mt Brighton, and just last week my gear selector decided it was no longer interested in keeping itself in the middle of its range.

It still has spring to the right of center, toward 5th and reverse, but is limp to the left and falls easily toward 1st and 2nd.

It also still selects all gears, but no longer "guides" you from 2nd to 3rd, for instance.

I removed the cover surrounding the selector stick, but haven't yet delved under the car. Under that cover, obviously, I found no help.

I figured I'd run it by you folks first, to get any and all insight & advice.

Other than that, I really enjoy this car, which rather fell into my lap.

This past weekend I pulled my buddy's Jeep Cherokee out of a stream!

If I understand you correctly you might have the same problem as I did.

Two bearings at $20 each underneight the car, up on dry shaft are worn out.

After replacing those I can now put the gears in place, no more lose spots all over the place, before whenever it was on neutral or in first gear the stick was shaking all over the place...

I'll have a chance to look into it this weekend.

I just got the dash put back together, with new lights for the heater control, yippee!

I accept your words as knowledgeable, but I am curious about it...

Thing is, it was quite sudden.

One traffic light, it's fine... then, coasting to the next light, I notice that it's completely bogus.

strange.

We'll see!
