mikebike357
I swapped my air filter to a K&N yesterday and found a secondary filter in the airbox. What gives? My Outback is a PZEV and i'm wondering if the secondary cotton looking filter has something to do with that. Thoughts?
laz
You mean the air cabin filter? X ---
mikebike357
Nope... I mean the actual air cleaner element under the hood, left side. Cabin airfilter is in the cabin behind the glove box.

subarupartsdude
Well Mike we had a 99 impreza wagon come in for service and it had two air filters in it.
mikebike357
See any issues with removing the second one??? I would think that it would be restrictive? Trying to squeek some extra get up and go out of it. CAI w/ a K&N and a pulley did wonders for my Forester.
subarupartsdude
No issues or codes at all.
MonkeyHermit
I don't think it's a PZEV thing, I got it too.
cosgti
How can you tell me if your car is PZEV? I bought an '08 Outback, not even aware of PZEV and I have read other posts about people who bought PZEV cars but didn't have the badge. So now I'm wondering if mine is. I don't think CO is a PZEV state. Easiest way to tell is how many O2 sensors you have. Non-PZEV cars have only 3. PZEV cars have more, 5 I think. Just pop the hood and take a peek, or look underneath the car.
goboom
Supposedly, PZEV vehicles are only allowed to be sold in states with the tough emissions requirements.
