Are 18's really too big for snow?

Half of the reason i got my car was for the trips i take up to VT for the winter snowboarding season. That being said, i was planning to use the stock rims with some snow tyres and pickup another set of rims & tyres for the summer.

Only thing is my stockers are 18's and it looks like there isnt a whole lot available in the world of winter tyres for them. I also read something about how 18's are too big for good snow traction (there may have been some long winded physics explanation attached to that one).

Anyone use 18's on a winter setup? Is it even worth it? Or should i just suck it up and buy a dedicated 17'' winter setup?

its not the diameter that matters, its the width. a 225/40/18 snow tire on an 18" rim will be fine in the snow. the only bad thing is that snow tends to stick to the inside of the rim since the brakes are not big enough to clear it out.

a quick search on tirerack yeilds for 225/40/18 winter tires

Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25

Continental ContiWinterContact TS810 S

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D -What I reccomend

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2

Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport

Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero

So you have plenty of choices ranging from 163 to 189 per tire.
