05 LGT with strange noise

Recommended Posts

I have an 05 LGT 5EAT that is making a humming noise coming from the right front side of the car. The noise is not real loud but it is annoying. It is at it's loudest when I am driving around 70 MPH. The sound is not affected by steering, gear changes, or accesories being on or off. It is only affected by speed.

The sound itself sounds like the exhaust noise of a riced out car with a fart can driving at a distance.

This is my company lease car and the lease is up in December. I would like to be able to find the cause of this noise and determine if it is something I need to fix before the warranty expires. I have taken the car to the local Subaru dealership twice for this problem. The first time they didn't hear it but they did fix the dash rattling it had. The second time was yesterday and they told me the sound was from the tires not being rotated and that the tires has flat spots on them. using that theory I rotated the offending tire to the rear. If it truly was that the sound should have gone to the rear with it. Needless to say it didn't. My tires also look perfectly normal with no abnormal wear, scalloping, or flat spots.

I am thinking about purchasing this car at the end of the lease. It has a buy out price of $13,000 Dollars which is below book value. I really like my LGT but I will have to let it go if I can't resolve this mysterious sound. I don't want something breaking down when the warranty expires.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should be checking?

Thanks for your help. Avengador1

I found a huge thread in the technical forums. It does seem to be a wheel bearing problem from what I read there. That is what I though it was and even told the dealer about it. They either don't want to admit that is the problem or they are too lazy to replace it under warranty. What can I do to make them do this?

Ugh, sorry to hear about one of those dealerships :(.

You could try talking to their Service Manager (or even General Manager at the Dealership), or take it to another dealership in your area. Good luck!

Almost certainly a wheel bearing.

I sent them an email, through their website, asking to schedule a part replacement. I also included a link to the technical article about all the problems our cars have been having with the bearings. I hope to hear from them early next week to see if they are willing to resolve this problem under warranty.

De ja vu! I just had this same problem, but it was the front left wheel bearing. After doing some sleuthing on this forum and found many other 05 owners with the same issue, I took my Legazi into my local dealer. To my chagrin, after having my car for 5 days, I was told that they couldn't locate the problem even after I told them that it was most likely the front left wheel bearing, and that I would have to pay the $140 inspection cost. I called Bullsh*t! To make a long story short, they finally "discovered" that it was indeed the front left wheel bearing and replaced it. The annoying noise and the omnipresent fear that the wheel will freeze at high speeds is gone, but now I have to take my Legazi back in, in order for the dealership to fix my rear bumper that they so graciously scratched and forgot to inform me until, I discovered it 10 minutes after picking up the car. And with a straight face they asked me to give them a good review. I can't wait to get the survey and customer review form from subaru america for the dealership. I'm gonna verbally tear them a new ONE!

I still have not received a reply from them about replacing the bearing. I think I might just have my mechanic do the job and write a nasty letter to SOA about the dealership's incompetence.

Take it to another dealer. And push the issue.

EDIT -- You didn't mention which dealer was giving you the trouble. There are 3 within 15 miles of what you list as your location. Try one (or both) of the other 2.

I didn't mention which dealership I am having issues with as I do not wish to slander anyone needlessly. If I cannot resolve the problem I might mention them then at a later time. Right now I still have time to try and resolve this.

I might also try to write to SOA to see if I can get the ball rolling or hope that the bearing problem gets so bad that it is obviously the source of the problem noise. Right now the noise is just starting to get more noticeable at the lower speeds, so It may not be too long before I have something "real" to show the dealership, so that they won't be able to blame on the tires.

My mechanic also confirmed that he suspects it is the wheel bearing too. Right now I have a vacation week coming up and I don't want to take it in and have to worry about it while on vacation. I will wait till after my vacation to start getting more serious about figuring out a solution to get it repaired under warranty like it should be.

I have the same thing with mine - however it starts around 45mph then goes away around 60ish. I rotated the tires and all but it's still happening. From all the reading I've done on this topic it sounds like a wheel bearing, but what the hell do I know. It could be part of the raccoon I hit last month!!
