'04 H6 3.0 Tranny Shifting Hiccup

Recommended Posts

I just got an '04 Legacy OB wagon and notice that it hiccups when shifting from 1st to 2nd and a little bit less from 2nd to 3rd.

It's not awful, but noticeable, especially when cold in the morning. It just doesn't shift smoothly or transparently. I took it to the dealer and he said it was normal. I don't know if this makes a diff but it has VDC.

I did a Major Tune up that is recommended at 30,000 even though my car is just 20,000 since it is over the time limit. I hoped the transmission fluid change would smooth it out, but it didn't.

What are your experiences with the auto tranny? Is it totally smooth through the gears or do yours kind of hiccup from gear to gear?

Wondering what to do...

Steven

Depends on the year. The original 2.5L GTs had the 4EAT that was rough shifting, but performed better. Then in '99 they smoothed it out due to complaints, but it lacks the same performance it once had. I like my 5 speed anyways. Since you have an H6 I would say that the performance oriented, rough 4EAT is in there.

I spoke to a Subaru Specialist once who told me that you would rather have your gears lock into place so that you could feel rather have them gently slide in and not be firm and tight. Or you could kind of think of this in terms of a manual transmission. At higher Revs when you shift to the next gear the tranny kinda of sucks in it, ready to go, it knows what it wants vs. at low speeds where you guide it yourself.

You can try resetting the ECU and TCU. To do this, disconnect the negative battery terminal for 20 minutes or so. Make sure all battery charge is gone before connecting the battery again.

The ECU and TCU are able to learn your driving style. So if you like to drive fast go out and tear it up for a while.

You will lose your stereo presets.

  • 2 weeks later...

i had the 2001 with the h-6 4 speed auto

accelerate up to 50 mph let up quickly on the gas and then press back down and the tranny will bang into gear.

fro the 2001 model year there was a update for the tcu but it didn't change it.

overall it was a great car and to this day i regret getting rid of it for a wrx
