WTB Small Diesel SUV - NYS DMV Issues

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been contemplating selling the old 'Burb in favor of a smaller more fuel efficient SUV. I don't tow much anymore, don't haul much anymore, infrequently lug around more then 3 or 4 people.

I've been wanting a diesel SUV or extended 1/2 ton pickup for a while but alas, there are nearly no offerings on this side of the pond. I would have liked a 5.0 turbo diesel Suburban or C/K PU, or even a Dodge Nitro TD (they have them in Europe using the same Italian TD engine. Bastards won't sell it here). There is a guy out West who also custom makes Duramax Suburbans out of a PU and Suburban.

So, I've had my eye on a used 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty CRD - been doing lots of research. The problem is New York State (and 4 others - California, NH [i think], etc.). They have really strict emission requirements and the CRD Libertys can't be sold here as a result. It just sucks that OEMs don't have a bigger diesel vision here - give us more efficient (and clean) diesel choices. Jeep even said that selling 10,000 CRD Libertys exceeded their expectations. And they friggin' cancel the program? WTF??? I know about the upcoming Bluetec 3.0 Grand Cherokee and the Toureag. I started wondering about titling used model in NYS. I contacted the DMV and here is their response:

Hi. I am interested in purchasing a USED Jeep Liberty CRD (Diesel engine) fro...

Dear customer if it has over 7,500 miles on it you will be able to register it. Mark

Hi. I am interested in purchasing a USED Jeep Liberty CRD (Diesel engine) from out of state. New, the CRD Liberty is legal for sale only in 45 states excluding New York.

Can I legally register a used Jeep Liberty CRD in New York State?

Thank you.

I'm pretty stoked. I thought they'd shoot me down for sure. I'm gonna put the Renegade light bar on it, some slightly larger wheels, BFG All Terrains, tint, carputer, exhaust, etc. There are even 2 tuners that make ECU flashers or piggyback cards.

Whoo hooo!!

and . . .

do you find yourself in need of a vehicle much in the city? I've been contemplating how to handle that but am a noob to NYC.

Hmm... having never lived here and living in my shoes, you're making some grand assumptions. :) Street parking isn't bad in my particular area. I rent a garage/parking spot also.

Yes, I've often had the need for an SUV as I've done much carpentry/construction in the past. I also tend to be the DD hauling around 7,8, 9 peeps and my kids to events and family functions. I've also done some towing here and there (dirtbikes, ATVs, an an ocassional water toy, etc.). What's the diff between my Suburban and a soccer Mom's 8 passenger Caravan? Not much IMO except she has some more headroom and I have 4wd and more weight/towing capacity.

I don't live in Manhattan. I live in suburban Quenns where there are "normal" single family houses like most other places of the States. I just happen to be really close to the city is all - walking distance and 15 minutes away from Manhattan.

Most folks that close don't "need" a car let alone an SUV. But what is "need?" It's different for everyone. Yes, I would survive without it as just about everyone else would.

;)

How much does a typical (cheapo) rental/parking space in one of the burrows run? Parking and the $ drain are my main concerns.

I'm very new to the area . . . been staying with family in NJ for about a month, and am about to move to the Park Slope area. I'm a recently divorced dad and I've got a 5 year old to shuttle around by myself! Guess I just dunno what to expect. Will probably try without a car first and see how it limits me.

Isnt the Jeep Liberty one of the deadliest SUV's out there?

Doesn't seem like it, no:

This is the link to Liberty info on the NHTSA site. Not terrible. Not great either (for rollover).

For sh00ts and giggles, I looked up a similarly sized SUV, the Ford Escape, and the the ratings are pretty much identical: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/3476.html

yeah, he should just buy a Lexus RX400h because we all know that is the greatest vehicle ever made....followed closely by the BMW 330xi. :spin: :spin: :spin: :spin: :spin:

:eek::p

I've always been a fan of the concept of the CRD Liberty, just never could understand the transformation from the rough and "real" Cherokee to the cute and cuddly Liberty. Bah!

Hey sublo, question. Does the Diesel laws apply to the big ass 250/2500 series pick ups?

Nah. Those are classified Light Trucks not Passenger Cars. You can buy a brand new light-duty diesel truck (Chev/Dodge/Ford) and register it in NYS with no problem. You don't have to wait 'till it's used.

Cool. Funny thing is my favorite three vehicles right now are:

(1) GMC Sierra 2500HD w/ Duramax diesel

(2) GMC Sierra Denali

(3) Mini Cooper S

(The above are in no particular order)

Yep. I've been seriously considering a Chevy K2500 Duramax Extended Cab. But crap... I just wish they made them in 1/2 ton and with a slightly smaller Duramax like the rumored 5.0L V6. That would likely have 250HP/400Ft-lbs Tq.

Here's another thing that REALLY burns me. Dodge has been selling the Nitro with the same exact VM Motors 2.8L TD in Europe as the Liberty CRD here for a while now. They refuse to release it to the USDM for some reason. I'd buy it in a second. WTF DCX??? WTF are you guys thinking? Please read this. It's a no-brainer money-maker for your troubled company.

The reason is, the engine is not 50-state certified. Therefore, it can not be sold in California or New York, which buys more cars than anywhere else in the country.

I was thumbing through Diesel Power looking at a section devoted to marine diesel engines. MTU makes a unit that is a 4.2L inline six making 350hp. It's only 36 inches long, not real wide and weighs under 1000lbs. Why in the hell can't I get this motor in a 1/2 ton truck!? Who do I have to kill! To add insult to injury, Cummins makes the damn thing, MTU adds the needed equipment for maritime use.

True, but neither was the Liberty CRD and current VW TDI. They were sold in only 45 states. The five excluded states account for about 40% of car sales nationwide if I remember correctly.

Actually, vehicles with a GVWR of over 8,000 lbs are exempt from the stricter diesel emission standards. As a result, in the U.S., 3/4 and 1 ton pickups can be had with diesels while 1/2 ton pickups cannot (due to the stricter emissions requirements for vehicles w/ a GVWR of under 8,000 lbs). Also, the Hummer H1 and former Ford Excursion weren't pickups but still had diesel engines due to their GVWR.

Not true anymore. Now all diesels have to meet emissions. Just check out the DPF's all the big diesel pick-ups are now using, along with Ultra Low Sulpher diesel fuel.

True. I believe those changes affect MY 2008 and later vehicles. That's why there is now an incentive for manufacturers to develop light-duty diesels, such as the Mercedes Bluetec, VW Touareg V10, and the VW TDI, as the 45 states will be required to meet the new for 2008 MY 50-state diesel emission standards.
