Time for engine rebuild Advice for mods?

:spin: :spin: I have a 2002 legacy wagon GT, auto. We were just told the the leaking oil was a head gasket problem and that we should just drive the car until the oil leak gets worse. Then the whole engine will have to be pulled. Love the car, can't believe this is happening to our wagon at 65,000 miles. Any advice on things we can have done when the engine is fixed that would improve the performance of the car? Anyone else have this head gasket problem? How much did it cost to have it fixed?

Thanks

Michael

Hmmm...that seems bad.

Sure its not just valve covers? They are alot cheaper to replace and that would explain an oil leak that for sure. Seems early for them to rupture, but Ive never heard of advice for an HG is to drive it until it gets worse. Hmm..

That is the dumbest advice ever. Whoever told you that wants to sell you a reman'd engine instead of doing the job right.

If it is a head gasket issue, and nothing is broken/warped/scored/etc. then you need to pull the engine, replace all gaskets and put it back. Will cost A LOT less than the cost to actually rebuild the engine.

Or do it yourself. Will take a while but it can be done.

Make sure the car has had the coolant additive added by your dealersghip. They will do it for free. That extends the warranty of the engine to 100k.

If the leak continues have them replace the headgaskets.

Nothing in the engine really needs to be touched when replacing the headgaskets so anything else will be extra but since the engine is already out and you want to spend money...

You can have the cams reground by http://www.deltacam.com for $75 each (x2). Never heard of a problem with these cams.

You can have a lightened crank pulley installed. Engine doesn't need to be removed for this.

There really aren't any cheap mods that need to be done while the engine is out.

Best investment may be OBX headers, high flow cat, 2.25" piping, STI axle back.

If the engine is out it is good to have clutch work done if necessary. You can add a lightweight flywheel which will allow the engine to spin up faster. Does not add horsepower.
