Wiring a Radar Detector into the powered mirror?

Blaze

Recommended Posts

Have any of you tried wiring a radar detector into the powered autodimming mirror (with or without homelink)? I was thinking of attempting this...but didn't really want to jack up my mirror's wiring in the process. It may be more trouble than it's worth...but wanted to see if anybody has attempted this....since less wires ='s GOOD. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Yes, I did. There are instructions in an old post if you search. Sorry, but I don't remember what wires go where. There are three wires to the mirror - you tap into each outside wire. You don't need to cut the wires - just splice into them. Worked out very well for me.

Here's the first 3 I found that should answer questions for both of you!: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4335 http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1840 http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3279

I hate to revive an old thread like this, but after doing more searching and reading the links posted here, I haven't found specific instructions or pics for the installation of a radar detector's power onto the Autodimming mirror's power. Anyone run across this yet? I'm about to finally purchase a radar detector, and I'd really like to do an easy permanent wiring install as soon as I get ahold of it. Thanks.
3. There is a connector that feeds the mirror/compass. If you have the mirror/compass there are 3 wires coming out of the connector blue, black and green. Blue is +12v and Black is ground. I spliced the valentine 1 power into the blue and black cable.
Radar detector power to the blue wire. Radar detector ground to the black wire. These wires are all behind the front map light console.

Ok, I've seen that walk-thru. I just kept seeing posts where connecting it directly to the autodimming mirror was mentioned, but never had any details. I will look into wiring it in behind the map light console. Thanks.

I think there's a misconception going on here. You wouldn't want to connect to the wires going between the headliner and the mirror itself IMO! It would look VERY amateurish without a ton of work. It's EASIER and NEATER to either tap into the wires for the mirror above the map lights, or get your power from the fuse area. I believe that the wires running to the mirror itself are fairly small in diameter. It wouldn't give you much to work with. Keep in mind that the headliner is NOT attached to the windshield in any way. I can easily be tugged down to push a wire or two in there so that they don't show. :) You shouldn't have any problems. Tapping into the wires above the map lights is only slightly harder than plugging in the cigarette lighter plug! :)

Trent, Thanks for the info. I guess I kept thinking there was a way to actually tap into the wires between the mirror and the headliner. Maybe this weekend I'll get the chance to to open it up and take a look.

Finally got my Bel Pro RX65 in today. Does anyone have instructions on how to wire this puppy with a regular RJ11 telephone cord (which wire does what)? I've got about a hundred little 6-footer telephone cords laying around, so I figured I could use this instead of dropping $10-30 on the regular or smartcord direct wire kits. If I can figure this out, I hope to use the walkthru here: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4335
