left footed whooten
Hey guys, Got some JDM projectors for my 97 BG6, and the low beams aren't working correctly AFAIK. I could be wrong and just expecting too much. Bulbs are all new, H1 and H3 standard sylvania, 55w. I installed them and they function well on high beam, parking, and the turn signals, but the low beams are not very bright. The wiring for the US model has the 3 prong plug, since one bulb handles the high and low beams. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_2925.jpg On these JDM's, there are four terminals in the plug, one is for the parking lights that you see lit above between the projector and the turn signal. That was the easy part to figure out. Now, the round projector lamp and the inboard lamp both light up on low beam, and the indicator for the high beams comes on 'halfway' (reads: dim) in the gauge cluster. This makes me think that the wiring is more different than I think. (For the record, the high beams light up both as well, just with more intensity and light, seems like no problem there). http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_2993.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_2997.jpg The projector lamp is wired with the black and red wires in the (blurry) photo here: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_2999.jpg The inboard is wired with white and red: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_3000.jpg And for reference, the driver's side light assembly with the projector front and center: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_2905.jpg The fourth wire is blue, which goes to the parking lights. What I did was wire red to red, white to white, black to black, and connected the parking light portion of the turn signal to blue. I did use 14ga wire for this conversion, which is much beefier than what the car had on it. Could that do it? So, hopefully this is similar to an Impreza headlight conversion, maybe someone could shed some light or tell me what a goon-tard I am and what I did wrong. Hopefully I just made a stupid, simple mistake.

left footed whooten
Thanks to Mulder @ nabisco for advice. This is more like it: Low beam http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_3004.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_3005.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_3002.jpg High beams: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/dcole_01/The%20BG%20wagon/100_3006.jpg
IwannaSportSedan
That does look better, but shouldn't the low beams and parking lights still be on with the high beams?
left footed whooten
I was wondering the same thing, but I tried every wire connection combo and this is what worked the best. The only time i had them both on at the same time, they were dim, like the first photos. In person, the high beams are way adequate. Can't figure out if they are supposed to be like that, or if that's the best I'm gonna get. I'm just blown away by being able to see the road. Breeze
I had a JDM BG5 wagon and all the lights are lit on high beam. As to the wiring I am not sure what the differences are between US and JDM but it must be a regular thing for any JDM-US conversion surely? left footed whooten
I thought as much, I'll fiddle with it some more sunday maybe. The improvement is so huge though, I'm already satisfied. I have a feeling the wiring differences require a bit more dissection than I'm willing to engage in, since I plan on picking up a Spec B when the 08's come out. Either 08 or used 07. I bet the wiring differences are more than at the light plugs themselves. -My USDM car had 3-prong plug to bulb/ 1 bulb for low&high beams. -JDM lights have a 4 prong plug/ 2 separate bulbs for low and high, plus one for the parking/courtesy light. -JDM lights have common positives, etc that are beyond my electrical knowledge & time to futz with. So long as I can see and don't catch fire, I'm happy with what I got. None of the wires made sense, I had to plug & play, trial and error to get to where I am now. None of the red went to red, none of the white went to white, etc. Haven't gotten a hold of any wiring diagrams for my MY97USDM Outback or the JDM car. Too busy finishing nursing degree.
