Askim's Subaru shop in San Rafael?

I don't have any experience with Askim's, but you can go another 15 mins. north to LIC Motorsports (licmotorsports.com). I highly recommend LIC, and I've had all of my work done there (parts installation, oil changes, etc.).

It's something that's debatable, and you won't get a definitive answer on which is best. Personally, I use regular oil until ~10K miles, and then switch to synthetic (Amsoil 5W30). I then change my oil every 5K miles (so 15K, 20K, 25K, etc.). Keeps it easy to remember when it's time to change. ;) In terms of other fluids, I just stick with regular.

Do you go to LIC for the 5K oil and filter changes? If so, what do they charge for that?

I did 5K oil/filter changes on my Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon (that was Volvo recommended). I'll probably do it also for the LGT instead of the recommended 7500.

They charge $10 for regular oil, $7.50 for the oil filter, and $25.00 for the labor. You'll also have to pay for a new crush washer on the oil drain plug (they installed a Fumoto valve on mine, so I don't have the price).

I normally do my own oil changes, but I'll have them do it when I'm getting other parts installed (i.e. turbo swap, downpipe install, etc.) if it's almost time for an oil change anyway.

Does anyone have experience with Askim's Auto Works, an independant Subaru shop in San Rafael?

I also recommend LIC Motorsports.

I do, however, know that Askim's Autoworks is highly regarded, and they do very good work in their own right. They use genuine OEM parts (almost exclusively) to take care of your Subaru, and are a very good name in the business. I might consider them if it weren't for the fact that the Forester is modified...and the SVX requires a specialist who owns one...(Adam @ LIC).

Thanks for the recommendations for both Askim's and LIC. Today I visited both of them, liked them both, and their prices for the 30,000 mile OEM-list service are Askim's = $500 and LIC = $300. I see no reason to pay $500 when an excellent shop will do it for $300. As CreoSTi said above, LIC is only 15 more minutes up the freeway.
