Saw this and thought it was neat. Didn't see it anywhere else on the site, so appologies if it's a repost:

Jalopnik, where I got it from, has some event going on about it too:

What they should do is to make the engine more fuel efficient. It really consumes too much fuel

Yeah the good ol' H-4 isn't terribly fuel efficient, compared to other 165HP four cyilnders. But you get more torque across the range, eh, tradeoffs. But I'm not liking the ~18MPG stop&go city I'm getting in my 97 LGT Wagon 4EAT. :(

EDIT But yay Subbie! :)

It isn't anything inherent in the Boxer design, or even Subaru that is giving you mediocre fuel economy.

You're driving a very heavy car with full time AWD.

The '05 Legacy lost a lot of weight and that, combined with better engine management has increased fuel economy at least 25-30%.

I wonder why cars like the A4 3.2 quattro get better milage?

same city and 1 mpg better highway. Probably due to its six speed/CVT and less aggressive gearing. the 6MT spec.B gets the same gas mileage. The LGT gets a performance penalty

07 6MT Spec.B gets 19/26, 07 A4 3.2 Quattro 6MT gets 17/27 and they weigh about the same.
