Intake Question

Please forgive me if this has already been addressed. I have looked around the forum and haven't seen the this issue addressed.

I have a 2005 Legacy GT wagon and I was looking at the air filter and intake over the weekend. When I pulled out the filter box, I discovered another jug attached to it on the unfiltered side of the air filter. This jug is about a half-gallon in size and hangs down inside the fender. What does it do? All I can come up with is that it smooths out air surges when the throttle opens or shuts.

Anyone know exactly what it does?

BTW, after taking apart the snorkle and airbox to get to the filter, I thought that I must be doing something very wrong, so I looked in the owners manual.

Turns out I did everything exactly right. So my comment is this: what sadistic ba----rd designed that air intake? It would be fairly easy to open and replace the filter, except that the lid is wedged up against the ABS and power steering plumbing.
