Tranny Swap?

Recommended Posts

Hello Iam new here and love the forum. The 95-98 legacy rules. I have a couple of questions for all you legacy gt pros. I am experiencing a mild vibration in the back of the car when I make sharp turns or u-turns while giving the car gas. It get more noticeable when you accelerate harder in to the turn. The car doenst do it when your coasting into a turn or u-turn only while on the gas. Now, last year the car was experiencing similar issues and I took it in to the dealer and they put in a new part called solinoid C and It was fixed for exactly one year. Iam now having the same or similar issue. The dealer mechanic says its not the solinoid its the clutch system in the back part of the tranny that controls the rear power to the rear wheels. He checked out the solinoid part they installed last year and he said it was fine. He also said that he really wouldnt know till he pulled the tranny apart and see if it was the clutch parts for sure. So..... What do you guys think. Am I getting played or do you think this is possible. He wants 700+ to fix the issue. Last year its was 700+ also. This is exceeding the cost of a used JDM tranny or used ones found on ebay with low miles. Should I get it looked at buy someone else or just buy a used low milage tranny on ebay and have a tranny with 30-60k on it? My car currently has 132,000 on it now. I love my car but and I am tired of messing around at the dealer. They seam to allways have something expensive to say. Ya know? Well I look forward to your guys input and hope You guys can help me figure something out! Thanks Alot,

Ryan

#1 Fill in the rest of your information, specifically location and model.

#2 Get a second and third and.. opinion. Try and find a good local suby specialist. Look in your regional forum here and on www.nasioc.com.

From your description I would guess bent rims, really bad wheel bearings or I don't know what else.

I had the same problem with my 95... it wasn't quite as bad as you describe, but I left it and it never got any worse or presented any problems. Its just the rear wheels starting to engage and giving you that shudder. You will experience the same thing in a 4-wheel drive truck/SUV. Unless it gets really bad, I'd wait it out for a while.

The problem was the transfer plates in the tranny. Wasnt the viscous coupler. I changed out the solenoid "C" last year and I guess it put more wear on the plates causing them to finally wear out. I quess if you drive to long with the vibrations it evenually messes up the other parts if you drive them long enough in poor condition. The solenoid fix only got me a year untill this. Owell I love this car and dont want to get rid of it.

Thanks for your help.
