Hard Wire Radar detector

There's several "walk-through" threads as well as threads that simply describe such a task in-detail.

Favorite power taps are from the interior rear-view mirror, front map/dome lights, cubby, or cigarette lighter.

I hardwired my Valentine1 from the fuse box (in the passenger compartment). I was able to hide the cable behind the a-pillar without removing the cover actually - just pried out it a little bit and then routed the cable to the outer edge and under the rubber trim - then you route it down, get it under the dash on the side, again without removing any panels. Bottom line it's invisible and you don't need to remove ANY panels! Hard to describe but I hope it gives you idea.

I used fuse splitter from Pep Boys to get juice from the accessory fuse.

I have remove installed in the center of instrument cluster. Again, I routed the cable from the fuse area there and got it above steering wheel column without much trouble (and removing anything).

Really easy! IMHO don't bother routing it from the power sunroof harness.

hard wired my passport 8500. pop the lense cover for the reading light by the rear view mirror, pop the cover with the switches for the light/moon roof, use a switched wire (you need a circuit tester) i think it was blue, use a 3M tap and the hard wire kit from Escort with the 12v ends cut off, put 12v w/spade end in tap and grd. the other. you need to notch the switch cover for the wire, small file will do it. passport on/off with ign. switch. i put passport on windshield w/suction mount to were it just under tint, can't see it unless you look for it. bosco

I hid the main unit of my Valentine 1 beneath the headrest on the passenger side and under a cheap add-on seat cover. Ran the power to the power tap in the console and put the remote display inside the ash-tray where it fits fine. The only part needing some effort was running the remote display's signal lead along the console and in thru the back of the ash-tray. The volume control is not readily accessible, but I use it at a low volume anyway.

With the display in the ash-tray it's a simple push to open and close with no obvious movement for the police who frown on such devices.

It's a short term temporary solution for a state that outlaws them.

ssn666, the states that outlaw radar detectors can tell if you have a detector if it is on and recieving their signal. does'nt matter how hidden it is. also canada can do the same and if found out they can take your detector. i know because i talked a canadian cop out of taking mine. i assume the US cops can do the same. bosco

Radar detectors are banned in Virginia, D.C., and most of Canada except BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

There are state laws that prohibit mounting stuff to the windshield also.

I have my V1 mounted above the rear view mirror. The power is spliced off the autodimming/homelink mirror and everything is tucked into the headliner. The remote is mounted just to the side of the steering wheel where I can easily see it.

i have my v1 above the rearview mirror. tucked a cord from it between the headliner and windshield, down the pillar and into the area beneath the steering wheel where i put v1's power tap thing. the remote display is velcro'd on the steering column behind the parking light switch.

+1 on the ashtray install!

the ashtray is a great place to mount the V1 remote display. you can remove the ashtray insert (i guess it comes out to dump ashes) and the display will fit snug. just drill a small hole for the wire to go through. it looks pretty trick!

check this link out of tapping in to power. i used this on my wifes car. you remove one of the micro fuses in the panel and it adds a tap for adding power. no cutting.
