Another subjective stage2 exhaust leak question

So, I finally went stage 2 this weekend. All issues aside (stuff I will cover in another thread) - I hear a very quiet whistle upon heavy acceleration. I'm thinking (hoping) it could be a heatshield ringing...I dunno.

I used copper crucial gaskets on the manifold, uppipe & downpipe along with permatex copper gasket stuff. Manifolds are torqued to spec, uppipe & downpipe are torqued...well...a lot. :icon_surp Lock washers & anti-sieze are on all the bolts.

So, ah...you think a quiet whistle/ringing is a leak? Or would it be fairly loud & noticable? Or, do the copper gaskets never leak - the just drop bolts? :D

I also finally got to Stage 2 this weekend. PUMPED!! I checked, double-checked, and triple-checked bolt torques. There's more noise, but nothing I would say is an exhaust leak. I can hear the turbo spooling, and even the BOV in short, slow, accel's. Crucial pipes and gaskets also. I'll be checking the torque again tonight since I'll have put it throught about 5 heat cycles. Even more successful, the only thing I lost was one of those plastic fasteners on the engine cover!!

Different path, but one wierd thing that happened..... When I lifted the engine to get the uppipe out and then set the engine down, the engine shifted!! The mounting bolt wasn't even near its hole. At first I was quite concerned, but then I put the manifolds back on and just moved the engine back into place.... phew.

Thx guys. Exhaust leaks are like the bane of stg2'ers existence. I got enuf on my plate I don't want to have to worry about leaks right now - especially after doing that whole install by myself. Now I can concentrate on getting the 02 sensor that I totally ruined fixed.

Gratz on other recent stage 2'ers too! :) Doing both UP & DP is quite the task!

Damn, I guess it was up pipe and down pipe weekend huh?

I installed my Borla Uppipe and Flow downpipe.

My OE gaskets for the downpipe did not come in last week as I had hoped so when I put those on, I'll re-torque the up pipe...

No AP for me yet, but the butt dyno likes the results (and the studder has decreased significantly!)

There's no need to lift the engine at all, the UP will slide out of the bottom with everything else in place, as long as you remove the EGT sensor.

I'm probably the only idiot that didn't realize it until I tried pulling it thru, but there's a heatshield/bracket on the end you have to take off too. FWIW, I unbolted the engine and tried to lift it, but it wouldn't budge...I got it maybe 1/2" up, but after taking out the EGT & the HS bracket, it came right thru.

I couldn't get the EGT sensor out, actually began to strip the nut, so I just lifted the engine. No big deal either way.
Weird. My EGT came right out, no prob. The F'in O2 sensor is another story. I'm gunna kill the engineer that located it right next to the uppipe bolt...can't turn the damn O2 sensor socket because it hits the bolt. Next, I'm gunna kill the subaru tech that put in the new O2 sensor w/o antisieze. 7/8" open ended wrench rounded the crap out of the flats on the sensor. Finally sheared the end of the UP bolt threads off with the O2 sensor socket & an 18" breaker bar. Took me like 2 hrs to get it out including riding my bike to NAPA to pick up the O2 sensor tool. Then I got PB blaster & antisieze on the sensor - didn't take long for that CEL to come on...I'm sure it's ruined. Oh well, the dealership owes me a favor - they can replace it... again.

I have a odd ringing too. It only happens upon heavy acceleration between 2k -3k. Crucial up, COBB dp, crucial copper gaskets.
Yea, I don't think it's the turbo - I think it's the turbo heatshield rattling because the 7 bolts have been reduced to 3 & it resonates at about that RPM under heavy load...probably a little bit of both really.

  • 1 year later...

I got a noise that I could describe as a low pitched whine as well. Strangely, it happens on any degree of acceleration and when the clutch is disengaged and I'm coasting.

The noise will go away when the clutch is only partially engaged or under engine braking. And this is all new since the uppipe went in.

What the hell is it?

Why does everyone take the front O2 sensor out?

If you just disconnect it from the wiring harness and pull the two push pops off the block bracket and pull the chord down; you can get the heatshield off and use a boxend wrench on the UP bolts.

I'm posting a spin up video on youtube right now.

Here's the link:

The hissing is right at the beginning of the video so turn up the volume and restart it.

Let's kick this pig!
