Cable chains on summer perf tires?

Hi,

Leaving for Mammoth in a few hours and we can either take my friend's wife's 325i convertible (backseat, ugh) or my Legacy.

Problem is, I have Michelin Pilot Sports that are nearing the wear bar. I know I won't need chains until the end of the drive, but if it's snowy, will cable-type chains be enough with these tires?

I've never had to use chains; when I lived in Montreal I always put on a set of Blizzaks and called it a day :)

Once you put them on, the cable/chains do all the work tractionwise in the snow. But where I'd worry is the wet/ice/sludge/snow that you'll hit before you get to the point were chains are required. That could be pretty treacherous with nearly worn summer tires.
