2k6legGt
Does anyone know the difference in the material in standard tint and the kit you can buy (hotsubarus.com) for your tails??..... is it just tint that is pre cut or is there a difference in the adhesive..... the reason i ask is i am interested with buying some material and trying different layouts on my tails kinda like the ones pictured below -- Thanks, D
ddavis
Tint is flimsy, the stuff that hot subaru sells is really thick compared to tint. Almost like a flexible plastic. I believe the adhesive is similar on both though
2k6legGt
i wonder if my tint dealer in town can get access to that think "stuff" ...wish i knew exactly what it was
OCDetails
It isn't even similar to what your local tint shop has. You would have better luck getting it from a clear bra installer than a window tinter. Either way, even if you got a roll of the material you would still have to cut it out. I would think that it would be easier to just purchase the overlays from one of the vendors and then modify them after the fact like I did with my front corners. That way you don't have to cut them to the shape of the tail light. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . Scotty
I'm ranting here, but I know you guys want to look cool and all, but keep in mind blacking out the taillights do have a negative effect. I was behind someone at night in semi stop and go traffic. The guy had his taillights blacked so much that the brake lights look like running lights and the running lights were barely visible. You become so used to seeing a certain amount of outputs from the brake lights that when you see the dim lights it doesn't quite register in your brain. It's almost like driving behind someone with no brake lights.
G.T.Subie
These overlays have 3/8" holes cut into them to let more light out. IMO at night there is hardly any difference. They basically just get rid of that chrome/alteeza look that I dont like.Keep in mind that not all of the styles have the holes in them. OCDetails
I've got some good before/after examples for anybody worried about light output with these. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/OCDetails/parking.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/OCDetails/brake.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/OCDetails/reverse.jpg _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . andrew.anderson
Nice looking car. I really like the smoked taillights. My wife has some for our car but is waiting till after the winter when the car comes our of hibernation to put them on. I am anxious to see how it turns out. ddavis
Ive got the stealth black ones and I still dont think theres much difference between them and your regular lights as long as your have day time running lights on. Light seems to pass threw hot subarus material really easily, unlike the older tailight covers which was a serious hazzard. Ive had cops directly behind me a number of times and didnt pull me over. They look really dark with all your lights is off, but when Im driving i just leave on my running lights so so red shines threw. And heres the thread with mine, if your interested... http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26854
OCDetails
Here is your surprise of the day.... your tail lights aren't on when your DRLs are on. Only your headlights come on automatically. Unless you turn the knob there isn't anything behind you. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . ddavis
yeh I know, thats what I meant run your headlights during the day. My friends told me that the first day when i was driving at night with them following me that my taillights wasnt on. Why would they just connect the lights, I have no idea. I just leave the light switch on 24/7 since they turn off by thereselves whenever I park
jonnyg113
The material used in to tint the tail lights is made be 3M. Like everyone else has said, the plastic is thicker than tint. For 50 some bucks, I think it was worth ordering a lazer cut piece to fit on my LGT. Heres what mine looks like. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e329/jonnyg113/IMG_1272.jpg

Our car is black also. The tail light tint is the biggest single improvement we can make for our cars rear end.
jonnyg113
^^^^Thanks. I was real happy with this purchase. I get compliments all the time from subaru owners (mostly WRX owners in envy). Others who dont know about the legacy, tinting your taillights is just adds to the the question of... "what kind of car is that, its really sweet." I also decided to keep the reverse lights clear. Think it adds to the rear end look.
