What to look for prior to getting 97 Legacy GT?

Been wanting to get something RWD/AWD and 4cyl for awhile, so I'm curious as to how reliable/what to look for prior to purchasing a 97 Gt. The classified ad says it has low miles, and is immaculate. He's only asking 5K. How reliable are legacies? What about 97s? How could I avoid the Head gasket/catalytic converter problem that I see these cars have? How common are these probems? The car will probably see a decent amount of commuting (10K during the next year easily), and I'm curious as to whether this would be a good car to put that type of mileage on. I'm just curious because I don't live near a Subaru dealer, the nearest ones are in Baton Rouge/New Orleans, which can be an annoying trip should the car be problematic.
