Collapsed PCV hose?

I was replacing my battery terminals the other day and noticed this hose completely collapsed at both ends, looks like it's the PCV hose. 

It was hard to get the right angle on the hose, but it is completely flat in both places.

is this just from age or caused by something else? 

I've already ordered the kit that comes with both hoses pictured and the PCV valve.

I haven't noticed any symptoms, but would there be any expected from the hose being collapsed? haven't noticed anything in particular, was just curious.
