UTEC dataloggin and tuning

Recommended Posts

After unsuccessfully trying to get/buy a base UTEC map for my LGT from a few vendors and a few folks here on this forum, I said f*it, I'm gonna tune it myself... I've built a couple of 400+rwhp rx7's before with Standalone ECU's, so I have some experience, I just needed the time.

I used a LM1 wideband AFR meter together with this kick ass datalogging software called MPS_UTECLogger written by Jason Mussetter to capture data, and intially I did a little datalogging with the stock map, and then with the STI stage 1 map (came from turboxs), neither one of those were close....

The only mods on my car are a non-flex aftermarket up pipe, along with a Cobb DP, and the biggest problem is that the tip-in, or acceleration enrichment is way off in both of the forementioned maps. See logs below...

Here's the log of the stock map (map selector on 0), I only ran up to about 6000 rpm, check out the messed up AFR's

This is the STI stg2 map downloaded from Turboxs, Notice how the A/F ratio goes from super lean to super rich (this map is way too rich from Legacys, yet the ECU is still very lean before the transition to UTEC control

Since I'm running on CA 91 octane piss water, low 11's AFR causes slight knocking (the bold values). But the car feels like it's gained at least 30-50 hp since I'm running 3-5 more lbs of boost with much better combustion.

Another thing is that the turbo is too small, the max psi here is 15 psi then tapers to 12 psi, however this was 2nd gear, in 4th the turbo boosts to 17psi and then tapers down to 15.

Note that this is with the boost solenoid on almost full duty cycle, so the turbo is basically "floating" (like running with no wastegate or wg shutoff), basically don't expect your stock turbo to last very long at this rate (maybe 30-50K miles maybe a little more).

Looks pretty normal for AFR's on the stock map. Look at the post above and most people show similar numbers.

As for the whole tuning thing, knock, and generally messing with anything. I consider it voodoo and stay away from it. :)

First you need to read the manual. From looking at you logs you need to calibrate your TPS, this is explained in the user manual and is very simple to do. When you go WOT you should be in the 90 or 100 load site columns. You should also see 98-100% TPS and your not even close. You also will need to adjust the MAP range in the Parameters menu since it is default set at 18psi and you are definitely not going to be running close to that with the stock turbo. You will want to set it to the peak boost that you see.

I will be more than happy to help you sort out a map. First fix the TPS calibration and then get some more logs and I will help you with the next step. The User manual will help you through alot of the basic stuff. And when you have the UTEC set to map switch position 0, you are then running on the ECU and the UTEC has no effect on it.

Thanks, Matt.

I know about the map selector, I was using 0 map to see how off the stock map is.

I was going to calibrate the TPS, but didn't have the manual with me when I was road tuning, so I didn't have a reference. Overall, I'm fairly happy thru the 1st stage of rough tuning, as the car is much faster now, and I've tuned out almost all the knocks. It looks like I'm getting there slowly.

jordan23, what mods do you have on your car? If it's similar to mine, then you can try my maps, it's almost all there now. It drives like stock, except a small hesitation/barely noticeble at the switch over state.

Mod list would definitely help. Also have you changed the plugs? If not how many miles are on your car? Have you been running a base map prior to the tune?

Its not unusual for the car to make less if when you went in the A/F ratio was on the lean side or it was knocking.

Give us a list of your mods. Check your current map and see if the load-site 0 column is modified as well. A number of other things can cause your symptoms, vacuum leak for one.
