Radbert
I'm going to order some Goodyear GS-D3 tires for the Spring and am wondering which of the above sizes would be better for 8" wheels (Rota torques with 48 offset) and 1" iON lowering springs. The 235/40/17s are on special right now for $168...just $3 more than 225/45/17. According to the specs, the measured rim width for 225 is 7.5" and for 235 is 8.5". I assume then that the sidewalls will be a little stiffer with 225, but any handling advantage might be offset by the narrower tread. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Goodyear&model=Eagle+F1+GS-D3 Maybe they are so close as to really not matter? Opinions?
LittleBlueGT
Not much diff IMO. I went with the 235s on the exact same wheels. Sweet! LittleBlueGT
Same springs too. They lower more than 1 inch though. Mine rubbed once (doing 100 over a speed bump, doooh!), I then removed the rubber on the fender lip and did not have a problem. HansGT
for what its worth the 235/40/17 should be closer in OD to your stockers. 215/45/17: 24.6" 225/45/17: 24.9" 235/40/17: 24.4 Keefe has told me that the ideal set up or common set up on track cars is to have your tire 1 inch wider than your wheel. So for an 8" wheel that would be a 225 (9") tire. But if you want a tad more meat....235 will be fine, just maybe a tiny bit more sidewall flex. as for tire rack's listings....if you compensate for an 8" rim measuring width: 225 would equal 7.8" tread width (add .2" to the 7.5" measuring rim width) 235 would equal 7.9" tread width (subtract .2" from the 8.5" measuring rim width) so your only gaining a little width with the 235. The other thing to consider would be weight, but seems they are both 23lbs.
HansGT
either will work. oh and the 225 will give you a tiny bit more sidewall (few mm's)....so if you have a lot of pot holes in your area...this might be a better choice.

Xenonk
Or get a 245/40/17 instead and get some of the sidewall to stick out some and protect that rim lip. If you are going to go wide, go w-i-d-e . Keefe
Radbert
Thanks everyone so far for the advice. Does the below mean that I would have a greater chance of rubbing with the 225s on lowering springs vs. the 235, which are 0.5" less diameter? for what its worth the 235/40/17 should be closer in OD to your stockers. 215/45/17: 24.6" 225/45/17: 24.9" 235/40/17: 24.4 Keefe has told me that the ideal set up or common set up on track cars is to have your tire 1 inch wider than your wheel. Xenonk
no, your 235s will have a better chance of rubbing on the shock body rather than the bottom of the spring perch... in terms of tire diameter, you will start rubbing the bottom of the spring perch if you use something in the lines of a 25.3" to 25.5" tall tire. zildjiank
Do the 235s...EVERYBODY has 225... Not me...I went for 245...shouldn't have a problem once I mount them...
whitetiger
what about a 235 on a 8.5" rim. would that have the same side wall stability as a 225 on a 8.0" rim?
Xenonk
Do the 235s...EVERYBODY has 225... Not me...I went for 245...shouldn't have a problem once I mount them... I have 245/40/17 on my 8"... Race compound Advan R032s.. not your typical "street tire" either. My rims are a +40 offset, so I had to get the rear fenders rolled to fit these monsters and added a little bit of negative camber up front to clear the fenders. Xenonk
what about a 235 on a 8.5" rim. would that have the same side wall stability as a 225 on a 8.0" rim? you would actually have more stability/steering-feedback on an 8.5" with a 235 in most cases.. a wider rim is always better. 235/40/18 tires on a 18x8.5 rim pics: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24119 Keefe
