A few questions on upgrades/changes

Recommended Posts

Hey folks!

I like my 2014 Legacy, but am not in love with the fairly dated head unit on it. I'd like to look into getting one of the more modern touchscreen setups, but need some info first! I've replaced head units in the past, so that much is easy enough. Before I mess around with taking apart the center dash to try to check, though, I was hoping to get info on what accessories I might need to swap out the stock unit. I am unclear if the head unit is built into the dash, and if so, would I need to buy a new, open dash piece? If not, would I need to get new brackets to mount a non-stock head unit?

Also, I would like to look into getting a switchblade-style (flip?) key. I'm leery of keeping my keys in my back pocket due to previous keyfobs breaking from this. I haven't been able to find such a thing for the 2014 Legacy, but if anyone would know, it'd be the folks here!

Thank you for your time!

Not sure if you have the nav headunit or not - if not, there are plenty of options - you can get a trim piece to go around the stereo, etc. from crutchfield and others (crutchfield packages most of their stuff with adapter harnesses, etc., or at least they used to)

For the flip key, there are options on fleabay - here's one

Thank you for replying! Re: the fob, where can I check the frequency of mine? I see another listing as 315MHz and another for 435MHz.

Also, could you elaborate on what you mean by nav head unit? Mine is this one, I believe:

I bought a couple of those exact style flip keys for my daughters Ford Fusion. They're OK quality considering how cheap they are, but I went with the other style where you just transplant the immobilizer chip and FOB module from the OEM key...

You're less likely to accidentally press the buttons on that one, plus the OEM module is water resistant, the aftermarket one isn't.

My local locksmith charge $45 just to cut the key blank. If I needed more than one I probably would have just bought a machine to do it myself. You can find them for like $160.

That's the non-nav headunit - it's basically a double-din unit and there are tons of options for replacements - if you search a bit, someone here even got a floating screen unit which looks pretty cool.

I got an alpine halo ilx f409. That’s probably the floating screen he referred to. It works great, I love it, and I get compliments on it all the time from passengers.

I think it sits quite nicely. There is a YouTube video where someone installed it lower on a legacy as well.

Hopefully that doesn’t break any rules.

Is there somewhere these or similar units can be shopped, that aren't so absurdly expensive? I'm a firefighter, not an infosec specialist lol

You have to weigh the quality you are getting for the price as well, it is a lot of money but a good head unit will outlast the vehicle it is installed in. Any double din unit will work with the correct mounting and install kit. Check crutchfield.com they have tons of good options that aren't as much as the one above. And their service is excellent.

The 309 is absurd. The 409 isn’t bad I got it from pacificstereo for less than 700$. A good h/u is not gonna be cheap unless you aren’t concerned with upgrading a lateral move would be more affordable but i believe anything less than 400-500 may be in vain if you have the HK or similar own system
