Blinking HVAC and Radio

Recommended Posts

Daughter came home this week from school. She said the radio and heating/ac display was flashing on and off. Here is a short video of the issue right after starting the car. Is it time for a new radio/HVAC unit?

Mine is doing the flashing thing too sporadically! I hope replacement isn't the only solution.

Is it worse when it's hot or cold? Does it get better or worse when you tap or push on the radio face just below the display?

There is a common issue with the solder joints on the connector between the radio and faceplate, resoldering can fix it.

She just took the car to the store and she said she gave the radio a soft bump with her hand and it stopped blinking. I am comfortable taking electronics apart and soldering so that is a project for this summer I guess. Thanks much for the link to the other thread with info.

Clean the battery terminals.

This was an early issue with some of these cars in 2004. I stumbled onto the fix when I did my yearly Winter car prep, which includes cleaning the battery terminals. When I grabbed them to loosen them, I found them loose from the factory.

Once cleaned and tight the issue went away.

That's the free easy fix, try it first.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
