Subaru does not have a head gasket problem!!!

Recommended Posts

As this guy points out ... haters will always hate, but he contends that apart from a few early engines, Subarus did not have a systemic head gasket problem, and that the later models have never had head gasket problems. :spin:

Just one anecdote, but I had more (qty. 2) head gasket failures on the 1 Suzuki and 3 Mazda products I've owned than any of my 6 Subarus over the years. In fact, I've had none on the Subarus.

Would I still buy a Mazda? Sure. Can't buy a Suzuki in the US, but I might consider the Jimny under the right circumstances if I lived where they were on sale.

I have owned three Subaru Outbacks (1996, 1998, 1999) and all three required head gasket replacement. That was a $2,000 repair for each and every one.

I've also owned at least 15 other vehicles of various makes and models over the years and none of them required a head gasket replacement even though they all had well over 100,000 miles on them before I bought something else.

When I hear people repeating the Subaru party line that goes something like, "no head gasket problem here," I can only point and laugh.

I also own a ZR, renowned for HG problems, whenever anyone says “my zr has never needed a head gasket” it makes my eyes roll so hard like prepare yourself, it’s coming

I would hazard a guess they were all DOHC... there was a generation that had head gasket issues. It wasn't all of them, just a enough of a percentage to be noticed. The stigma has hung around for a long time.

The experiences you cite were more than 20 model years ago.

This is the Gen 6 Legacy (MY 2015-2019) subforum, and those engines (FB25 and EZ36) indeed do not have a "head gasket problem."

I believe the naturally aspirated SOHC engines (EJ253) also commonly had head gasket issues? I had to get mine replaced on my old 2.5i.

Yes, a small range of the SOHC did as well.

But it’s been 12-15 years since there was any kind of real issue.
