NNJLegacy
So my ear's perked up when near the end of the video he says "Subaru Japan recommends CVT fluid change every 3 year / 36k Miles.. I just turned %%K on my 2015 Legacy... and I want to keep her within the maintenance schedule. So.. can the average back yard mech change the fluid in one of these CVTs or should I seek a local reputable and trustworthy mechanic to do it? Your thoughts are highly appreciated. TorqueLegend
ya it's dooable. Not super fun but dooable. There are some good youtube videos out there on it. Try to keep the fluids consistent so use subaru ATF if you've never changed it. Just need 4 jack stands and a bottle pump takes less than an hour. It'll drain roughly 6 QTS but I think the capacity is closer to 12QTs Per o'Rileys. I've seen some people do another change after 5K miles to try to get more fresh fluid in there but its up to you. Or you can just have a Lube Shop flush and change FTW.
ammcinnis
... use subaru ATF ... No. First, ATF is not CVT fluid. Second, there are several different specialty fluids required for different Subaru CVTs. Only one type is right for your particular CVT. I agree that you should only use Subaru-branded CVT fluid. Definitely avoid "one size fits all" aftermarket CVT fluids, even the "prestige" brand names. Or you can just have a Lube Shop flush and change FTW. Very bad idea, for the reasons stated above. At the very least, they won't have the proper CVT fluid on the shelf. Is your "Lube Shop" prepared to provide you a written warranty on the CVT and torque converter equivalent to Subaru's ... out to 10 years/100,000 miles? 08SpecB_DE
I wouldn't trust a Jiffy Lube type of place to change the cvt fluid, but an independent shop can easily take care of it for you. They would most likely use a Subaru cvt comparable fluid unless you request Subaru specific fluid. I don't know of any shop that would fill it up with atf without looking up specs first but I wouldn't put it past the shady looking places. Since Subaru has never published the technical specs for their CVT fluids (plural), at this time there is no such thing as a "comparable fluid." Your car, your choice. I agree that a well-established independent shop is a good choice for jobs like this, especially if they are Subaru specialists. Ask if you can supply your own fluid, just to be sure. (imho at least) In the video that was quoted, I think the guy was probably referencing poor old Mr Kilmer in regards to being a major Subaru hater .... but to give Scotty his dues, whilst he hates CVT's he ALWAYS states to use only the actual OEM CVT fluid when doing a CVT fluid change. WILLINH
I think they are reliable 90,000 and have not even done the front brakes. Just maintenance. Easy oil changes every 5,
