The idea was to have a reliable car for weekend trips in the mountains (hiking/mountaibiking/skiing). Subaru is a very uncommon brand here in Europe and I never noticed these cars until a longer trip to the Canadian Rockies. I really enjoyed the roadtrips that we did in these robust vehicles. Although I would not use them as commuters due to the high fuel consumption. Which version would you go for? Is it worth looking into the 2007 facelift? Also the 2.0 engine seems to have three different iterations: Legacy 2.0 (101 kW) Legacy 2.0R (121 kW) Legacy 2.0R (110 kW) Which one is the best? I never drove them as manuals but most cars sold here are manual. How good is the manual 5-speed gearbox? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Max Capacity Posted June 6, 2020 Share Posted June 6, 2020 HP is a good thing. Not sure if your 5mt is the same as ours ? I can tell you these cars are great in the snow and icy conditions. I ski every weekend during the Winter, my drive to Vermont is about 150 miles one way. Even without snow tires the cars are awesome with a good all-season tire. To help, Subarus are the #one used car in VT. When you go to he ski hill Employee party, the parking lot looks like a Subaru dealership. I remember my first ski trip to Colorado years ago. When we walked out of the airport terminal I saw UPS trucks were not trucks, they were Subaru's. I have a number of Winter storm drive stories in these cars. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Schnack Posted June 6, 2020 Author Share Posted June 6, 2020 Yes, Canadians seem to rely on subarus for quiet a while now. Especially in BC and AB where temperatures can easily hit -30°C. Our conditions in the alps are obviously not as harsh, but some days still require 4wd to get to the resorts. I would love to get some input on the different engines and packages. You don't want to pay this for a "weekend mountain car". The 2.0 engines seems to have a good balance of fuel economy and power.
