Pop Sound While Driving

Recommended Posts

Hello,

New member and first time Subaru owner here. I just bought a 2020 Legacy Limited 2.5i and overall have loved the car. I’ve got about 500 miles in it, but have discovered something recently on a drive that has me perplexed. There is a small but noticeable “pop” noise that happens when accelerating or reversing from a stop and happens every few moments also when the car is in motion. Any Legacy owners (especially MY 2020) noticed this noise? Seems to be coming from driver’s side almost in the dash or around there.

Sounds like the pads are shifting inside the bracket. Is it a single metallic sounding clunk?

Yes, from what I can tell that’s correct. Which pads are you referring to? Just want to note that the noise happens even with the car is in motion (no braking). Appreciate the reply!

Oops, I may have read your complaint wrong. Can you make a video of the noise? Have you contacted the dealer about this issue?

I tried making a video but it’s difficult to hear well. It just happened a few days ago so have not yet been to the dealer. Planning on taking it by and will update you.

My dealer said it’s the struts making the noise, but car is okay to drive. They are going to replace them. If it continues, I guess I’ll just have to get used to it.

It's odd they would be defective so soon but at least they're going to fix it. I wouldnt personally deal with a noise like that on a new car, but that's up to you.

While I understand your point of view, I would respectfully disagree. I am a first time Subaru buyer and first time customer at this dealership. If I’m the dealership, I’m pretty embarrassed that such a good car is already making a noise that’s impacting the customer’s enjoyment of the car that’s barely 2 months old. It’s a relationship business and I don’t think the dealer would have the same enthusiasm to fix an annoying noise that isn’t technically impacting the drivability or function of the car as miles increase, warranty or not. Plus, if the car’s making these noises at 600 Miles, what’s it going to do at 60,000?

Culprit ended up being a loose bolt on the pitch stop mount. Once they tightened it, noise stopped. Interesting, huh?

I’m taking mine in next week. At times makes a crunkle (yes crunkle - between a crinkle and a crackle) sounding like some crunchy stones but only once or twice a day, and not on hard bumps nor on smooth roads!). One dealership I took it to said they couldn’t find anything, but it wasn’t where I bought the car. He basically just put it up on the racks and shook things. It could even be some gravel or something that got above the bottom insulation. I will be surprised if they find it but will be ecstatic if they do.
