Weird rattle noise, youtube link in message

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So my 3.6R had been doing pretty well since her first side swipe. Replaced my rotors and pads recently, went EBC, premiums and ultimax(i dont go that hard in the paint), and its eliminated all brake vibrations that I was feeling after the wreck that I felt like were a product of the damage but the parts were not replaced as they were not noticed to be damaged upon inspection by the adjuster. (Bullsh1t)

Now I have noticed a strange rattling like noise. Sounds like it MIGHT be more from the passenger front than the driver front be not entirely sure on that.

Thought it might be a heat shield? Dont feel as if wheel bearing issue because the noise is very audible when cold started and then ran through the transmission gears. Feeling like this may indicate something transmission related(hopefully not)

It is more common to occur in first gear when just starting to go but I think I did notice it on the highway on ramp in 3rd the other day.

YouTube link for the video I put together of some instances of the noise occurring is below, 1st portion is just stopped, going through PRND, then some accelerations from stop which is when the noise almost always occurs.

That sounds like heat shield rattle to me. There's three specific shields that I've experienced rattle with: the shields above each muffler (one per side), and the shield in the middle of the midpipe, attached to or near the transmission. Make sure that each are tightened down as much as you can, as they could've easily been knocked loose by your collision (mine worked their way loose over years of driving).

Personally, I removed the two heat shields in the rear above the mufflers, as I have the Nameless axlebacks which are MUCH smaller cans than the giant factory mufflers, so they have much more open air around them and don't really require the heat shields anymore.

Thank you very much for the insight!!!

I'll do some crawling around under there.

I'm wanting to go aftermarket exhaust but in nervous the bolts on my Y pipe are so old they will crack or otherwise will need extraction. Just dont want to end up accidentally straight piped till money comes in

The bolts will almost definitely be tough to get off, but most aftermarket axlebacks will come with new hardware anyway.
