nonamepony
Hi! Got some strange mettalic rattling noise coming from my car. Its not constant rather on and off. Seems to be more prominent while idling actually.. Anyone have an idea? Noise is here ---- https://youtu.be/N0GoPKONXg8
F4T4L
Same happens to me, but at 1400-1500 rpm. Somewhere the exhaust heat shield is loose and causes the rattling sound. It's a common problem on all subarus at different rpms. Here are a few examples and how to fix it:
SchwarzeEwigkt
That sounds like classic Subaru Heat Shield Rattle[emoji769] to me. Every Subaru I’ve ever owned or helped keep alive developed a rattle once it was 8-10yrs old. Get underneath and tap on the exhaust with something nonmetallic. The rattle will likely reveal itself almost immediately. For what it’s worth, that sounds exactly like when the heat shields they put on the header pipes that were on my EJ25D and EJ253, and on my friend’s EJ22 came loose. I tied them up with stainless steel wire and they didn’t bother me again until I junked the cars. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
nonamepony
Thank you for the input. Indeed you were right. Going to try the metallic wire-thing.
SchwarzeEwigkt
Thank you for the input. Indeed you were right. Going to try the metallic wire-thing. Hey, that’s great news. Incidentally, you might try clamping them down with exhaust clamps. It’d be easier to get good and tight, unlike the wire. As long as you didn’t go all Hulk smash on them and crushed the pipe, anyway. That’s how the dealership fixed it for me when my wife’s Forester was still under warranty. Worked fine until they rotted off due to the fact that they used mild steel clamps. You’d probably want to use stainless ones, though I can’t imagine those are inexpensive.
