oil leak on 98 lgt wagon

Recommended Posts

I just bought the car and it looks like oil is leaking from under the plastic pannel on the front of the engine where the belts are.

I cleaned the engine good with some engine degreaser and it is definitly comming from under that cover.

I am quessing it is the oil pump gasket?

The car is a 1998 lgt wagon with 56,000 miles.

Any insight on the chances it is some thing easy and cheap to fix?

could be... the 2.2 and 2.5L engines are known for oil leaks. If it isn't bad and you can get away with another 10-15K I would wait and fix it when you replace the timing belt. When I did mine at 75K I replaced all the belts, cam seals, oil pump seal, and valve cover gaskets/gromets. This makes for no leaks and a great running engine.

I had the dealer replace the oil pump gasket and the cam shaft seal.

the leak seemed to go away for a while but I still get theat burning oil smell some times. but not as strong. I don't know if it is the residue for the previous leak or it is still leaking.

I get real lazy about looking under the car when there is snow and ice on the ground.

thanks for the input.

Jeff
