2005 Legacy Outback Engine Swap

My 2005 Legacy Outback finally died on me and I'm searching for a replacement engine.

 

I've been searching this forum and other sources trying to figure out what will work and won't work with my car.

 

I have a 2.5L engine with a 5 speed manual.

 

I really don't want to get stuck with an engine that uses oil. I've seen some things referencing 2005 as a bad year for Subaru motors, is there something older or newer that would fit and serve me better?

 

I don't care about performance, I just want a reliable daily driver to get me through the new england winters.

 

Any advice is appreciated! Feel free to point me to another section on this forum if I'm in the wrong place, or to any old threads that are helpful. I've been searching and will keep searching.
