Takotruckin
Actually, according to the figure provided in the FSM, the beginning of the red line is at 120C. Regardless, beginning or end of red line, it's BAD. That matches what I have seen on my car. The “3/4” mark is about 225°.
ehsnils
Use the oe stat. All turbo 4th gen lgts use the 072 stat. The different stats are for different models/na cars, etc. Subaru has different operating temps. If you mix up the stat you could get a cel for the car not operating at temp. A thermostat with too low temp is rarely giving you problems aside from a bit higher fuel consumption. Too high temp and you may get in trouble in warm weather and/or high load. Even a NA could benefit from the lower temp thermostat if doing a lot of towing.
m sprank
If doing a lot of towing you are probably outside the engineered use. Use the oem appropriate t stat. Simple as that. Even our full time attack cars use oem thermostats. For certain engine builds/race conditions/specific requirements sure you can use what ever you want/need. But at that point you are well beyond most and using the car in a way that Subaru did not intend.
