urbanachiever
since there is no tranny forum I guess I can post here. I have noticed that on my 05 LGT Wagon the 5eat tranny seems to kick when shiften from Reverse to Drive and the other way around. Not having much experience with autos before, i wanna know is it normal? I mean the kick if fairly severe, my GF's GTI is nowhere near. thanks
Duke of Lawnchair
Mine behaves the same. Turns out that if I really mash the brake pedal, the reverse-to-drive and vice-versa transition "kicks" just as much as my father's pillowey '05 Camry. AWD-Turbo
Make sure the car is not moving at all, and the brakes are on when shifting from D -> R. Once in gear, give it a second before hitting the gas. If the tranny is cold, it won’t shift as smooth as when its warmed up.
Drakuun
I've noticed this too, and I don't think it's the tranny alone, I think it's the process of the Drivetrain, tranny included, getting everything 'spun' back the right direction after you shift from R to D or vice versa. When it happens to me, it's typically after I shift from Reverse to Drive and try giving it gas immediately. This of course, in any vehicle is a huge NO NO! I certainly don't ever shift into drive while the vehicle is still moving and vice versa. What I'll typically do is either let the car sit in Nuetral for a few seconds before continuing the shift, or shift it, and let it sit a few seconds so everything gets spun back around. ClueByFour
I believe it's a function of AWD. Every AWD car I've driven in a slushbox exhibits this behavior (you have more differentials and other jazz in the drivetrain that need to take up slack and such).
