Sara32013
Hey guys, I'm posting here because there is a lot of traffic here, and I'm sure you guys could help. Anyhow, I now have a '98 Forester with a whine coming from the engine, only at idle. If I give the slightest amount of throttle, it goes away. Any help would be appreciated. relative4
Can you post a video of the noise? You can use a hose up to your ear to locate the noise, possibly one of the accessories. You can also remove the accessory belts one by one to eliminate/identify the culprit.

relative4
So either the PS pump or the alternator. Or the belt. If you pull the belt, you can (1) verify if the noise goes away, (2) thoroughly inspect the belt, and (3) spin/feel the pump & alt bearings. Sara32013
Ok, sorry it's been a while. I have tried this with the belt off multiple times and I have found that the noise is intermittent. It happen sometimes with the belt off, and sometimes there is no noise with the belt on.
relative4
With the belt off, can you locate the noise with a mechanic's stethoscope or hose up to your ear?
