Setnev
Head gasket and timing kit and be done. If you're going for long term reliability, swap it for a EJ222.
Myfirstsubie89
Ok thanx I'm gonna do alil research on a ej222
Setnev
They were found in the 99 Legacy Brighton/L and 99-01 Impreza. They were also called the EJ221 and EJ223. Despite the 23 hp drop in performance, they're reliable as hell, with known examples exceeding 300-400k miles without a rebuild, and torque comes on at a slightly lower RPM. kamikazepaco
the EJ222 isnt a straight drop, is it? or is excessive rewiring required? sorry, hadnt researched it yet
Setnev
It is a straight drop in. Your current ECU should work with it too.

Setnev
i just realized im in the wrong forum-- i drive a second gen 1999 Legacy GT lol still good to know Ya, the EJ222 from the 99 Legacy is not plug-n-play with any second gen other than another 99 2.2 car. I do have an EJ222 running in a 99 Outback 2.5 with my own custom built conversion harness that I'm developing without hacking a thing from the old harness. kamikazepaco
heeeeyyy definitely keep me in the loop about that. im tired of hacking up harnesses. im thinking about constructing my own, if my current motor gives me the time
RumbleRumble
Check the cross hatching on the cylinder walls. If it's good and the rings are fine I would do all new bearings and a full reseal.
