I spoke to him for about half an hour today. Definitely seems knowledgeable. He only does Subaru engines. Fel-Pro gaskets, all engines get the turbo oil pump, honed with a torque plate, comes with new water pump, timing components, new piston/rings. He's well spoken and doesn't seem like a hack. I guess I should visit his shop, but before I drive to his shop, I figured I would see if anyone has experience with Dana. Cash only, so I have to assume that is part of the reason for the excellent price. He will install for 800 including a tow to his facility and will install any wear items (radiator, hoses, clutch, etc) for free when the engine is out ("if it is out anyway I won't charge extra labor"). For $1800, it isn't worth it for me to consider doing an engine on my own. That is cheaper than an OEM short block. Comes with a written warranty. Has anyone used these engines?
