No drive to rear wheels?

Recommended Posts

2000 ((9/99 build date) Wagon GT with 142,000miles on. Recently acquired. Bit neglected. Changed all fluids and filters, added 2-part Barr's conditioner to Aut Trans as well. Changed out lots of other stuff too. Seems to run OK now.

BUT suspect no drive to rear wheels.

Front wheels spin a bit when pulling away from stop on wet roads, as if rear drive is not working or slow to engage. ABS working OK, no warning lights on.

With rear on axle stands, both rear wheels turn same way if one is turned by hand, so LSD seem ok. Prop shaft also turns, with Trans in "Park". (Is this right?) I had a rear drive failure years ago on a '95 2.2 Wagon; the welds holding the rear drive clutch-basket to the reduction gear drive-gear had failed.

If the GT Wagon has the same failure, can I remove the extension case with the transmission in the car and change out the clutch-basket/gear assy.? Or are the gears a matched pair and I have to change them both?

Is there any way of doing more diagnosis before dismantling anything?

Should there be a fuse in the under-hood fuse panel in the VCD/AWD slot?

It is empty, and I cannot find a reference to it the Driver's Handbook or the Haynes manual.

Any thoughts, suggestions or knowledge appreciated.
