The tread will distort further under cornering the narrower you go from a tire's "measuring width" wheel. If that sounds somewhat negative, it's supposed to. Cornering stiffness, cornering response, and steering precision won't be as good as they should be, and the car won't have as 'nimble' of a feel to drive. A little like driving around on tires that are about 10 psi underinflated, if that's an easier illustration. 45 and lower profile tires are intended to be fitted to wider wheels (85% of section width) than you'd use for 50 and higher profile tires of the same section width (70%).
