New hobby

So in an effort to keep myself from getting bored out of my skull and to potentially make some extra cash, I've taken up a new hobby. Wooden jewelry making. Mostly I don't particularly care for the maintenance side of IT (really liked when we were doing the hard and fast build stuff), and I like making things (I secretly miss doing construction).

Here's my first real attempt, using all hand tools (mostly files):

Super rough because of mostly using hand tools (well ... except a drill), and the mounting is super sloppy. But not a bad way to spend a couple of hours, and I'm generally pleased with how it turned out. Starting with rings because I found them most interesting, but will probably try some other pieces as well.

Now I have power tools though and should be able to produce something a little cleaner. Picked up an old (like WW2 era) drill press and a dremel from my dad who used to do carpentry for a living but has since retired and doesn't get as much use out of the tools as he used to. Ordered some goodies for the dremel that should be here this weekend, and reorganizing the garage so I have more space to work.

I'd like to eventually pick up a dual duty lathe so I can do metal cores or something ... maybe a small milling machine. All kind of depends on how into it I get. Mmmmm possibilities.
