mcg_
Perrin might run into issues of their own with patent law, since they aren't making a new part really, they are just making a different version of the stock part. Design patents protect the original ornamentally-not functionality-of an object. They are useful for clear knock-offs, like the VMS SSA.

I don't think a ssa would meet the criteria for a patent.

Sarang
Amazon patented photos of an item on a plain white background, and Apple patented a rectangle with rounded edges; both of which had (obviously) existed before. You still have to win lawsuits against people you claim are infringing, and stupid patents are less likely to win. Patents are also very expensive, think $5k plus, so that might not be worth it too. I think Perrin banks on people like us who will pay the bit more to the place that did it and who we know will do it right. Part of what you're getting is the Perrin name, which means quality r&d and good customer service.
4thsubaru
What about this one from Torque solution. http://www.torquesolution.com/wrx-va-short-shifter-p/ts-ss-023.htm
DrD123
I like the looks of the Boomba racing one http://www.boombaracing.com/2015-subaru-wrx-short-shift-transmission-plate/ Anyway - unless something actually has a patent filed/granted on it, any discussion on patent violation is pretty pointless. If it's not patented, it can be copied - if someone wants to copy the design and make and sell it cheaper, they pretty much can.
