Nexus 7 in-dash installation

Recommended Posts

Finally did my nexus 7 in dash project, pretty simple, didnt really follow any guide just altered as I went along

got a used bezel

cut out the clock housing

epoxyd little pieces of plastic to build up the gaps

lots of bondo and sanding

the nexus interfered with the ac vents so I chose to cut up one of the vents and modify it to fit, it required a lot of trimming but it still functions just a bit stiff

paint

epoxyd L brackets to hold the tablet in place

bent the charger and aux port back 90 degreed for easier connection

using timurs rom and automate launcher

I got rid of the ash tray and made a wireless charging deck there, and a dual usb car charger tucked under the shifter trim to power the tablet and the wireless charger

looks pretty clean, works beautifullyhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/4dd23831dea353d15211813a43cf6a10.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/4e9c259b888ab276bbe26bc755928133.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/71df3f99be33d774177fac139b19b5a7.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/43223013a00079ab35190d00092fa986.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/df1cd330e55da0c01f29f6f14cb56fcb.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/48d23bbc98f8785353d593bacfa35103.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/0573a3ce2751b8242b660577f5054101.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/361ff3dc4f11d9182275a8ab1a72ffa7.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/88480c4b218fa9e9028e2f36ffe1e058.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161004/7e47ef843a93ef3d70675e118bd5173e.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com

Nice job. You should rebondo and sand till its smooth and then plasti dip it black and itll look very close to the original color.

Did you use any electric tools like dremmels or anything? How did you wire the Nexus to your car stereo and power? Any videos I should watch?

No video's, but there's a couple of threads worth glancing through if contemplating doing it yourself.

the only electric tool I used was a dremel to trim the existing bezel,

as for wiring it up, its just powered through a usb car charger, and a long aux cord going into the the center console, the rom installed on the nexus takes care of powering it on or off when the car charger is turned on

I got annoyed with that. I carefully ground the solder grounding pads and then moved it upwards.

From there I glued it so it wouldn't break the contacts in case of a cable being yanked.

For the data and power I used a USB hub. Since a car runs DC, and that hub takes 12-22v you can wire a usb hub straight to the car without the need for a regulator. I used one anyway to clean the power. The mini ups I have will also do that.

This is the hub I used. https://static.amazon.com/EasyAcc-Aluminum-SuperSpeed-Charging-Y44BUS/dp/B00IHWBRL4

Just take out the hub, and mount it behind the nexus 7 across the metal bar, and then cut the cord off the brick and wire it to your cig lighter. Since this is switched accessory, it turns on the nexus automatically when enabled through the kernel.

I would also remove the battery since it's going to cause a rapid drain in high heat. There's a youtube video on this.

You could even pickup a mini itx ups for a replacement battery like I did from the dc-mini company.

This would prevent it from shutting off once you remove the lithium battery.

There's a JDM dash in the FS section. It fits with minor modification.

You could angel your usb port if you've got a steady hand, and hard wire the USB port for power.

Are you talking about this? http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/ca-norcal-h0017ag915-05-09-double-din-nexus-size-257132.html

At first I thought you meant a RHD dash which obviously wouldn't fit with minor modification since you'll have a steering wheel and pedals on the passenger side.

It fits.

There's a small gap to the right because of that, but if you trim the vent pieces, you can fit it in nicely.

Y'all should check out solidxsnake setup, he also uses it.

I know if fits, I've got a couple of them.

To be clear, a "dash" is the entire dashboard whereas a JDM bezel is the piece that fits in the top of the dash. That is why your post initially confused me.

I know this is an old thread, but this picture is exactly what I need to do, make the miniUSB tab come out of the back of the case rather than out the edge. I've got the back cover off, can you please explain exactly what to do now to get the tab bent at 90 degrees. Do I need to take the board out ( if so how 'because I've taken the 6 little screws out but the board is still stuck in there ) or can I do it in-situ? Is it just a case of unsoldering the 4 little blobs ( 2 on each side ) and then bend the miniUSB up carefully? Do those 4 little grounding blobs need to be reconnected afterwards ( otherwise how does the miniUSB get grounded? ).

Well if you're good with a soldering iron, you can just unsolder it and then gently pry it up. I'd use epoxy to resecure it later in case you pull the cord out. I used a dremal and cut off wheel and gently ground down the ground solder points until it lifted. Just be careful. I ruined one, and had to buy a second piece off flebay.
